What would I do - let your son have the rat, and don't either of you tell the ex!
No way! He will find out somehow, kids will let it slip and he would then realise he has an element of power over the family still.
I say tell him as soon as you've got the rats, and next time DS visits take some holiday brochures and rat photos.
I'm evil aren't l?. My DH knows there's nothing he could do if we split that would ever wind me up.

your son is making a good choice - but please get two - they do prefer to live in groups really and need other 'ratty' company! tho they are lovely affectionate pets when handled correctly!
as for your ex - just what business is it of his? the rat isnt going to live with him! What a to$$er!0 -
I couldn't allow a rat in the house, sorry I find them horrible.
But if I wasn't living with my son, I don't see what it's got to do with me at all. Maybe if I had a reason to be worried, but rats make good pets I understand, just I don't like them.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
If you said your son could have it if he saved for it and he has - I dont see how you can back out. You need to keep your end of the deal.
Re the ex, tough! Your house, your rules - dont let him push you around (or your children) As the ad says - you're worth it!

If you are happy to have a pet rat and are willing to step in & care for it when son's away at his dad's, with school etc, then go for it!Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.0

I loathe them, they give me the willies but if you are happy to share your home with one or two or 25 it is nothing to do with the rat you are no longer married to!!

Rats are amazing pets. Beautiful creatures. Cleaner and more intelligent than alot of humans! Get 2 at the very least as they are sociable and actually get lonely on their own and tell your ex to !!!!!!off. Its nothing to do with him!

When you get your rats, please make sure you do plenty of research beforehand. They take an awful lot more space, time and commitment than a hamster! You'll need a ridiculously massive cage, a rat proofed space where they can be exercised out of the cage and at least 3 or 4 (imo).
This is a good website to get you started:

Thanks everyone for all your help.
I am going to ignore the Ex, and have spoken to DS that he needs to get at least two. He was a bit crest fallen as it will take longer to save, so I have offered to buy the other one for him.
The holiday wont materialise, and its okay because I am taking them away anyway, and I dont think DS believed any of the 'promises' his Dad makes.SPC #1813
