    Morning Ladies.

Hope you're all ok. I will read back in a bit but I have a quick question.

I got my referral letter to the fertility clinic last week and my appointment is in 4 weeks time. I'm wondering what to expect. I know it's not going to be productive as they're going to tell me to go away and lose some more weight before they actually do anything but I'm wondering what they'll do whilst I'm there. Is it likely they'll want to do an examination or will they just ask questions etc.
Depends on what tests you've had already etc. I had a questionnaire to fill in about gynae history, family history etc. They worked through that, we were both weighed and measured. I was too big for immediate help too at the time, but the tests take a while anyway so they got the referrals for them on the go. I had an internal (behind a curtain) and swabs to check for infection, then forms for blood tests and hsg and SA and a scan. They may do scan there and then. I was advised to take dh with me. I much prefer to have him there for anything like this from the beginning and he wanted to be there too (mind you, he wants to be there for every midwife appointment, even if they're just checking my blood pressure lol). I think my next appt with them was scheduled for 6 months later. I think this was the appointment I was prescribed metformin...? But I could be wrong.

  • Thanks for the Hi's guys!

I havent tried the temping or ov testing yet, it seems to be expensive and we are saving money! I have been checking for the mucus and whilst that was definitely around last year its much less this year! I think its time to start doing all that as difficult as it may e with irregular periods

becsxxx I have the same issue as you, regular as clockworkwork till I had a colposcopy and loop diathermy in November. I was assured by GP and Colposcopist that they would cause no problems at all, but I'm getting a bit sceptical now!

fannyanna Like you I'm waiting for my appointment, I know they are going to tell me to go away and lose some weight but at least the referrals are in!

Most of all though I dont want my life to be all about this, I have a friend on her 3rd of IVF and having kids is the only thing she can talk about. It consumes her every waking moment, their wages and the continual expansion on their mortgage. Surely thats not healthy?

Temping is free and in my case rather reliable although retrospective I guess. I'm sure you've got a thermometer in the house in case of fever etc. I just use a normal cheapy digital one. I temp first thing in the morning, I can't do it in bed but go straight to the bathroom the same every day.

    Thanks Lily and Zippy.

We've recently done all the basic tests again (SA, scan, swabs and bloods) in order to get the referral. I guess the consultant wont want to do anything else but take some history and tell me to lose some weight.

I say that as I think the next step will be clomid and HSG but my current BMI wont be acceptable for that. Working on it though.

The appointment letter was sent to me (no mention of OH) and we know his SA results were fine and the problem is that I don't ovulate so I think I'll still just go alone.

I'm actually anticipating the appointment will be pretty humiliating because of my weight and I'm braver if I'm on my own.

hey slinky - I agree with thrifty, temping is virtually free and the only way to absolutely know that you have ovulated. You need a thermometer that has a decimal place, and if you don't have one, Amazon has one here for £1.99. The website we use to track temps is fertilityfriend.com and this is also free. You can see my chart here if you want a nosey..... :)

opk's can be expensive depending on which ones you buy. The clearblue smiley ones are expensive, but there are cheaper alternatives, and some ladies use a combination of both, using the expensive ones when you've had a positive on a cheaper one.

I bought these from Amazon, 20 for £3.75. I think you can even get cheraper buying in larger quantities. ;)

Slinky - I'm also new to this and hadn't decided what I'd use to track OV.

However, I followed the clearblue link on the first page yesterday to have a look and put in some details that came up on the "trial" link on the homepage and I've already had a call today and will now be testing the latest CBFM for them for free! Worth a try for you too?

Twigpig - thank you, I am going to get a thermometer as well

Oh my word, so something very embarrassing just happened. I've run out of opks and as I'm still getting ewcm and close to positive opk yesterday, I decided to go and get some more. We're not exactly overflowing with shops where I work so off I went to the supermarket. I know most of my colleagues go down there at lunch so got a few other bits (mainly my lunch) and headed to that aisle. Had a sneaky look up the aisle, then back down to make sure nobody I knew was there then approached that section. They're shoved in the corner modern under all the pregnancy tests so just as I was looking for them I heard "oh hello codemonkey" although obviously my real name. It was the office cleaner! I'm standing rather guiltily beside the CB digitals ( if only!) so it was pretty obvious what I was up to. Then because I talk too much I brandished my basket and said "just getting a few things for the dog", and fled. Spent a few minutes browsing another aisle then crept back only to encounter her again coming in my direction, thankfully before I'd reached that aisle (I ended up buying raspberries so she didn't think I was weird) then just as I rounded that aisle again another colleague was coming. I quickly picked them up and ran off. Then as I was paying and packing my bag this previously chatty male cashier saw the tests and went quiet. Then he told me to be good and winked!!!

Well it will make sure I don't run out of opks again. That and the fact that the supermarket opks cost £8 for 5. I've ordered 50 off ebay for less than a fiver and they're the same!!!

I also intend to give temping another go from next cycle to avoid these have I ov'd issues. Stupid body.
