I am not a camera expert but I have an earlier model from Fujifilm Finepix and I am very happy with it. It is now about 7 years old and working well but if I had to replace it, I would look at a similar one.

I just bought the Canon PowerShot S100, plenty of manual control if you need it

    Great results

I'm looking for one of these too. FRom all the reviews I've read I've narrowed it down to the EXf2 and the LX7. I generaly use a viewfinder when I am photographing. Like you I have always been happy with previous Panny cameras.

I like the the swivel LCD on the Exf2 but tSamsung don't make a compatible electronic viewfinder althought there is an optical one to buy.. The exf2 has wi-fi connectivity but that is not an essential for me.The LX7 takes the LVF2 viewfinder and I do fancy the Leica lens on it (but what is in a name?). You already have a Panny extetrnal flash so I know what i would plump for in the same position.

The other one I have read good revies about is the Sony RX100 - a bigger sensor but no viewfinder option (and I'm not even sure there is a hotshoe on it.) I've not found it in any of the shops to try it.

There is also the Canon G1x with, i think, has an APS sensor but the widest aperture is 2.8 (although it seems to get good marks for low-light pics in reviews), has an optical finder built-in and a swivel LCD. However, it is much bigger than the others and not really pocketable.

If you are going up West anyway, John Lewis and Selfridges are not bad for trying things out - but not buying at their prices obviously.

Let us all know what you decide.

I was going to recommend that too. I've got the slightly older S95 and it's a great camera. As small as a point-and-shoot, but takes some brilliant photos. Low noise, lots of controls, RAW if you want it. Equals some of the shots takes with my DSLRs
  • After my experience with my last Samsung camera, i'm a bit jaded against buying another (being able to email directly from a camera is nice though.. but I've just got an SD card reader for my phone which makes that feature redundant)

RX100 is outside my price range sadly! If you want a viewfinder then the X10 has one built in.

I'm in town for work so there won't be much shopping time.. I'm hoping some of the shops on tottenham court road have the LX7. I will say that having owned 3 different Panasonic cameras; they've never disapointed

Was in JL today and saw the RX100 for the first time. Too small for me and a slippery metal finish with no sort of handgrip at all.

They didn't have a G1x but i did have a look at the G15. I nver realised it had a bright 1.8 lens.

I was going to recommend the Cannon. I've had several from the powershot range and have found them good, relaible and quite tough. Carry it everywhere, use it ever day, dropped several times. Still taking good photos.

I like the SX range personally, slightly larger but they have full manual settings which is an option I like and do use.

Well, i'm pretty decided it's going to be the Panny LX7. Now to wait for my birthday :)

You can also check out the Sony T-series cybershot cameras. Some of them are even water and dust resistant. The one that I've is TX200V. It takes really good night shots in respect to its size. Like in low light situations, it takes 6 photos at different exposures and merges them together, resulting in a photo with low noise and high dynamic range.
