high-end compact camera choice

I'm looking to replace my terribly chosen Samsung WB150F (wifi isn't much point if the camera has slow as a mule focussing)

I've set my budget at £200-300. I want high image quality for family photos. I have no interest in 'big zoom'. I've decided I don't want much in terms of gadgetry (no GSP or wifi).

From what I've seen, i've got the following to look at

Olympus XZ-1 (£229)
Panasonic LX7 (£299)
FujiFilm Finepix X10 (£274) or Fujifilm XF1 (£280)
Canon PowerShot S100 (£267)
Nikon Coolpix P7100 (£249) or P310 (£180)
Samsung EX2F (£260)

I want good performance and low light abilities (for capturing fast moving pictures of the kids)

Does anyone have any of these? Got any comments or recommendations? Are there other cameras to consider?

Thanks

Have yo considered a dslr argos have nikon d3000 for £299
  • I was going to say that at that price it might be worth looking into DSLRs. Something like the Nikon D3100 could be ideal (£318 on Amazon including kit lens. Recently gone down in price as D3200 has been released :) )

I already have a Panasonic L10 dSLR (5 years old).. I've also got an external flash which would work on the Panasonic LX7 and the Olympus XZ-1 .. I want something that will fit in my pocket and won't scare my wife!

I'm specifically not looking for a dSLR or any interchangeable camera system, but thanks. Technically, I could spend £300 and buy the f1.8 lens for my dSLR that would 'give me' almost the same camera as those dinky ones, but I work by the mantra - the best camera is the one you have available at the time

Looking at them all.. it seems like its coming down between the Panasonic LX7 and the Fuji X10

Lot of truth in that that's why I bought Panasonic compact. I think it will be hard to get what you want in a slip in pocket camera I find mine frustrating at times. I think you can read all the reviews you like but the only way to find out how they perform is to find somewhere you can try them.

I'm going to Tottenham court road on Wednesday and hoping to try some out.

I know in my heart I want the Panny.. since i always like Panasonic photo gear.

Do you have the LX7 carper?

I can recommend the Canon G12. It is a superb little camera and it fits in your pocket.

    I have a Panasonic but it's a TZ10 hopefully the LX7 will be better.

G12/15 looks a nice camera with viewfinder

It should be a pretty different camera. The 'fast' lens is really what i'm looking for. Even the suggestions of 'get an SLR' forget that you then have to buy some lenses.

Now, i have an f1.8 manual OM lens for my dSLR. It's awesome, but totally unsuitable (i.e. manual focus...).

Yes faster lens bigger sensor should help low light performance looks a nice camera you just need to use it to see how responsive it is.
