if you do file a chargeback, paypal will immediately shut down your account. you will be banned for life. getting banned by paypal makes life very very difficult.

    Really?

Has this ever actually happened to anyone?

I was advised directly by Ebay to do this. I can't believe they would advise me to do something that would get me "banned" from Paypal for life.

    I seriously doubt it.

I'd suggest that if the chargeback were the other way around they would look less favourably at you as a seller
So many glitches, so little time...

    Proof of this please.

Or is this just another internet myth......

I'm sure that people that have got their bank to action a chargeback would soon be complaining if this was true.

    Life hard without paypal?????

Millions of people have never even heard of them, let alone never used them.

I know someone who got a negative balance with Pay Pal due to a charge back issued by the CC issuer, and then PP suspending the account and demanding repayment within 7 days.

Reason being that according to the CC issuer, the payment was made to Pay pal, so that's who they take the money from when a charge back is agreed.

of course they'll ban you. You are filing a chargeback against THEM. Not the vendor.

I got banned for life from another payment processing company. I bought a downloadable software that didn't work as intended. I told the software maker I'm not happy with this I'd like a refund. They would not coperate. So I contacted the credit card company and got a chargeback made. Didn't hear anything from them - got my money back and case closed. Then a few months later tried to purchase something else and the merchant got back saying I'm banned from using their payment services because I made an "unfair" chargeback against them.

Paypal is pretty crucial for web workers. I'm a freelancer and my clients from USA pay me via paypal. If I didn't have PP I would be in big trouble.

As I said, Ebay themselves wrote a lengthy letter to me, specifically advising me to request my card company to do a chargeback, as there was nothing further they could do to help me. From what I understand, Ebay owns PayPal, or they have some sort of strategic partnership or whatever. I can't see how Ebay could advise me to do something that Paypal would ban me for.

well large corporations are like that sometimes, even within the same company one department tells you one thing another departmnet will tell you another.

The facts are simple. When you pay via bank card. You pay paypal, paypal pays the vendor. A chargeback will be actioned AGAINST paypal. Not the seller. obviously, paypal will normally then chase after the seller to recover funds. If they can't, they'll come after you and will either appeal the chargeback or just shut down your account if you dont pay ball.

The best and only thing to do is for large amounts pay direction with your credit card to a real credit card mechant not paypal or nochex or payoneer or whatnot.

Agreed - you lose s75 in relation to the supplier - it would only work if PayPal did not perform the action you requested (pay a third party). I the DID pay the third party, the arrangement is concluded.

It seems that Which? have sought legal advice on this topic, and they disagree:

    http://www.which.co.uk/news/2011/06/are-your-paypal-purchases-protected-256720/
http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/section-75-of-the-consumer-credit-act/ (scroll down to 'Payments through Paypal and similar services')

It seems that if you are using paypal to pay a business entity (as opposed to a private individual) that has a business agreement with paypal you may have s75 protection.

I guess this makes sense, as otherwise retailers could just set up their own payment services companies to circumvent chargeback and s75 protection.
e.g. I buy a TV from Tesco - and Tesco request that I pay 'Tesco Payment Services Ltd' who then pay Tesco plc. If there was a problem with the TV, 'Tesco Payment Services' could claim they were just a payment service company so s75 isn't applicable.

So you have no proof against paypal.

Only a personal experiance via another company.

Why do they not have bank accounts they can send funds to your bank or a cheque......
    Western Union is another option....

They won't shutdown your account, they'll suspend it as Hominu says. The later means you can't setup another account with the same address, email or payment details. It's also not possible for you to close a suspended account.
