Paypal & Credit cards

When purchasing anything with a credit card the card providor is complelled to give you certain protections. If you pay by Paypal are those protecftions lost even though the money is taken directly from your credit card?

    the charge back option is still available. You could still have a case for section 75, but depends on what you bought.

    Paypal also have there own protection.

    The payment is taken from your credit card and credited to your Paypal account. You then use some ( eg if you already have some balance left) or all of it to purchase your goods using your PayPal account. So in effect you are fundinging your PayPal account with your credit card, not purchasing any item.

    Its a lot more difficult to claim chargeback and Section 75 if you pay via Paypal as theres a intermediary between you and the vendor. Your card issuer may claim that the contract is between them and Paypal, not them and the vendor.

    If you want full protection from your card issuer, pay direct. If you prefer Paypal's "buyer protection", pay via that.

    Agreed - you lose s75 in relation to the supplier - it would only work if PayPal did not perform the action you requested (pay a third party). I the DID pay the third party, the arrangement is concluded.

    Your only recourse is via a PayPal dispute (which I have found effective). A chargeback would be in error if made via your bank, and would leave your credit file at risk of a default.

    Where are people getting this doing a chargeback via your card provider is going to get you a default....

    This is the 2nd post that has mentioned this...

    Can we see proof of this. Or is this just another internet myth, that is just being banded around :mad:

    Far better to pay direct to a company that use paypal if its a large purchase.
    I can understand why people use PP, as they think it protects their details.
    Sadly that little bit of protection, leads to a loss of far more if things go wrong.
    Although C/B via your bank is a option. Just can be rejected as PP have done as asked in moving the money. Although in my experiance, this does not happen very often.

    Well, I've just called up Aqua to try to have them reverse a PP transaction (where the seller hasn't given my refund or communicated after almost two months).. The rep on the phone was nice enough about it, asked some questions and took down the details, and said he would be sending it off to raise a case, and that they would get back to me. So we'll see how that goes. I'm not sure if what I've done is a request for chargeback, or a s75, or something else? It's not a huge amount, so I'm not too bothered if I don't get it back, but still it's more than a couple pounds, so it's worth giving it a try to see what happens..

    Going to be a chargeback.

    S75 would have to be at least £100 for the item.

    What did paypal say? If the seller stops communicating they usually refund everything

    do not pay though paypal, pay directly via the retailers card merchant services.

    1) as others have said, you fund your pp balance with yoir credit card, you dont actually pay the merchant with your credit card.

    2) if you do file a chargeback, paypal will immediately shut down your account. you will be banned for life. getting banned by paypal makes life very very difficult.

    The problem is that I originally raised the issue through Ebay as a case - a normal returns case in fact. The return was accepted by the seller and everything looked normal - they sent me info on where to return the item, and agreed to a refund. I sent the item back, sent another message to notify the seller, and haven't heard anything back since. This wasn't a new seller - they have 407 feedback (which is more than me). After a few weeks there was an auto-generated message from Ebay, to remind the seller to issue the refund. After about a month I raised an issue with Ebay, and received a message back saying I should try to contact the seller again, and even something about that I should try to get the seller's phone number and call them. So I sent the seller a few more messages, even left a very poor feedback, still nothing. Finally by the time I had given up with Ebay and went to check if I could raise an issue on Paypal, I've realised I've just gone past the 45 days time limit for Paypal issues - in fact, it won't even allow me to try to raise an issue on the item because it just says it's past that time.

    So I'm not sure if it's worth continuing to try to resolve this through Paypal and explaining the whole thing again, or if they will simply say it is already beyond their policy expiration time. As I said, it's not a huge amount, so I can't be too bothered to carry on pursuing it. I suppose I could give them a call and see.

    Ebay and Paypal are supposed to be the same company now, right? Or at least I thought Ebay owned Paypal or something like that? I guess they aren't that well integrated if you have to go through two separate procedures to deal with issues like this..
