I cut DH's hair with clippers but never ventured into cutting my own. My hair is long and it grows really fast so I either need to get it cut really frequently or cope with it looking ratty. I can't really afford this lately - what with everything going up in price, except my wages, plus due to a terrible haircut as a child, I've always been freaked out by hairdressers. So lately I've been working the hedge witch look (mostly keeping it tied back). Anyway, this thread has inspired me and having watched the videos on youtube, I've given my hair a trim for the first time. I was so scared!! I only took about an inch off!! It actually looks ok. I cut the fringe a tiny bit short I think but it's a side fringe so it blends with the rest of my hair. I'm so proud of myself and happy that I've managed to save some money and it doesn't look like I went at it myself.

Thanks guys. This forum is full of great moneysaving ideas!!

I have always cut my kids hair, they are adults now and they in turn cut their kids hair.

I cut my own as well. Either using the ponytail method if I want layers or I put my hair in two plaits and cut the ends off. My partner does my highlights, he is pretty quick these days, and I get compliments on my hair quite often.

When I was a teenager I was the one that all my friends came to to get their mohican hair cuts and dyed. My favorite was doing leopard skin dye. It looked great.

I have really thick bushy hair, I really need it cutting but I have a bit of a phobia about hairdressers my nextdoor neighbour is one and she is a total !!!!, anyone have a fool proof method that I can try to take off a few inches and leave my hair looking semi straight? Or should I just brave the hairdressers? Last time I jad it cut it was in a concave and now its just past my shoulder blades!

Haven't braved properly cutting my hair, but i do trim my fringe when its getting in my eyes. But i do colour my hair myself which saves me a fortune. They'd probably charge about $90 to do it but i can do it for less than a tenner :D nd i'm always getting compliments on it so must be doing an ok job. :p

I have long straight hair and I cut it myself, it's easy enough to get the ends level with practice. It's even easier doing DD's similar long straight hair, she's 11 now and has never set foot in a hairdressers. I clip OH and DS's hair with a set of clippers I think we bought ten years ago. All in all we're a great financial disappointment to the local hairdressers.

I can't even trim my own fringe straight, so I just let my hair grow until it gets annoying (around 18 months) and then brave a hairdresser.

I user clippers on Marley's hair (no.2) and on Andrew's hair (no.8). It's far easier to keep Andrew still at home that it was in a barbers the only time we tried!

I'm cutting and dying my own hair tomorrow. I have been doing myself for about 20 years. I have very thick curly hair and hairdresser do like to make me look like a poodle. I now have if very short (about 1.5 inches on top, 3/4 back and sides), which needs cutting every 4-5 weeks, as it grows quickly. I couldn't afford to pay someone that often. I use clippers then cut into it

I must admit I always take a deep breath before the cut.

It can't look that bad, as I was once asked where I got it cut by a lady, who said it was what she wanted but her hairdresser never got that look when cutting it.
She looked quite shocked when I said I did it myself in the down stairs toilet.

Am loving the pics they are making me belly laugh, about 15 years ago my oldest sister cut my other sisters fringe instead of cutting below her fingers she cut above lmao she had 7 weeks off school and refused to leave the house haha still maked me laugh, I think its really simple for men to cut there own hair, to the ladies that do it ad still look presentable well done!

I imagine it's harder to cut mens hair. How would you get it all even? Someone at work's wife attempted to cut his with the clippers and he came in with a bald patch on one side!
