OP, if you imagine each forum here as its own little village then you won't be surprised to learn that most of them have a 'village idiot'.
Unfortunately you have found ours in Macfly. Most of us here tend to find ignoring his nonsense is the best bet as he is only after a rise.
Good luck whatever you decide.0 -
I think it's perfectly legit to answer "I would never buy cosmetics at a car boot" (which I wouldn't) - let's the OP know that the market may be smaller than he anticipates. They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0

Yup, and to normal people thats a perfectly legitimate response. Several ladies have answered here that they don't and wouldn't buy cosmetics at a car boot. One has replied that they don't. It gives OP some idea of the probable success of a venture.
I think the recent publicity about fake Mac and Benefit will put a lot of people off as well, whilst OP has said those aren't the brands they are selling it does stick in the mind somewhat that perhaps anything you put on your face should be purchased from somewhere where you can say without a doubt they are 100% genuine. Not saying at all that OP's make up is fake (do the even fake Rimmel etc?) but it will be on peoples minds.0 -

The OP has already said he's not bothered what you normally do at car boots. But of course, anyone who points that out is an idiot.0 -

let me put it another way. i want to do this for extra cash as im getting married in august and the extra hundred quid will come in handy do people think its worth it or shall i steer clear.
if i was selling at two for a pound for unbranded and a pound each for branded from peoples experience, do you think i would make a decent profit.
It would depend how much you could buy it for and what you were selling
I've bought, over the years: foundation (branded) (£2.50), eye liner (branded - £1) lipstick (branded - £1), mascara (branded - £2) and nail varnish (cheapy - 3 for £1, branded £1). That may give you some ideai know its trial and error and i probably have to try it , but i am going to have to buy the stuff and dont want to waste money i
Yep, it's a gamble. As I say, it all depends how much you can buy "stock" for. I'd say, initially, don't spend more than you can afford to lose.
If you never sold at a car boot sale before, it may be worth having a good clear out at home and having a go at selling that stuff first. Perhaps you could always "test" sell some cosmetics at the same time and see how they go. In my experience selling (my own cleared out stuff) is a lot of hard work for comparatively very little reward. It certainly doesn't pay minimum wageBut in my case, the alternative would be either binning stuff or taking it to the charity shop and since charity begins at home.......;)
Ignore booter, she's onviously not considered a "lady".
I realise that some won't buy make up from car boot sales, and that's their choice. I've never bought "snide" stuff (for the reasons given - you just don't know what's in it) and I can spot "snide" at 100 paces. But, I have to say, I've never seen snide high street brands. If they do make them, it's news to me. I've done a quick straw poll of friends/family - all of them say they'd buy make up from a car boot sale - but only if new and sealed. (I'm quite pleased about that, was beginning to think I was a little strange - oh wait, I probably am). But I also agree that there is a competition from pound shops etc. (although I've found stock in those shops to be a bit hit and miss).
So there you go mikethemike - a few things for you to think about. Right then, I'll just go get my coat...........0 -
I think it all depends on the type of car boot you will be selling at. I go to a few different ones, some of them don't allow any new items to be sold at all, some have the odd new items stall and some are more like a car boot/market with lots of new items being sold.
The car boot/market has a few stall that sell cheapy make up at around the prices booter mentioned and they seem to be fairly busy, but at the one which has the odd new items stall, they all seem to be very quiet. So I would suggest doing recon at the boot sale you're thinking of going to before buying any stock and taking it from there.:j30/7/10:j

I happily buy (sealed) make up from car boots. If it's half the price of buying it from Boots, I'll pay. I've bought enough make up in my time that I'd like to think I can spot a fake.******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0

Mike, why don't you have a clear out of stuff you don't need and take some cosmetics with you when you go to a boot fare. That way you can sell your other stuff and give the cosmetics a go at the same time. That way you may be able to gauge whether they are worth selling.
I never ever buy cosmetics from boot fares but I have seen plenty of women that do.0
