Definitely going on my list of potential cars to buy when I graduate. My plan is now to buy something like that, or a Merc 300TD etc that'll take veg oil. Because I'll be able to afford to buy and run something like that, but won't have the capital for something that's like 10k. Though reading through this what's the point of spending that much at all?! What I really want is a 730d.

The only issue with the 730 is they only made LHD versions in the E38 form as they were never released in the UK. Later E65 730d models were released in the UK.

If you are going down the budget diesel option, an E39 525tds might be worth a look. Cruder (but more robust) engine than the later 530d.

Mines a e34 540 v8 in cosmos black grey leather, no rust anywhere and resprayed both sides bonnet and bumpers a year ago. I did try and sell it but someone wanted me to give it to them so I kept it sat on our drive along its stablemate Audi A6 estate

    E34?

I'm a big fan of the E34, ran a 520i for a year while at uni. Delightfully refined, epic build quality (got to love that door 'thunk') and responsive in the twisties.

    I personally prefer the smaller 3ers, currently running an E30 325i and E36 328i.

We've had a Toyota Yaris Verso since 2000, and spent a total of £33000 on it since then, including depreciation down to an assumed £900, and absolutely all other costs, including tax, insurance - anything to do with running the car. Garage bills each year cost an average of £750. It's done 135000 miles, so that's 25p per mile even if it's worth nothing tomorrow. Recently we considered changing it, as it seems a lot to spend on repairs when the price comes to more than half of the "value" of the car, but at the moment there's nothing quite like it being made.

The posters who have advised continuing to run good old cars have got it completely right. If the cars do what they were bought for, then until the repair costs get silly, you save money by not changing.
