I do like the E34 shape, very gangsterish! Well actually they were used as gangster cars for several films of that era weren't they.

Go to about 1 min in. Admittedly its ancient but they take an old 5 series to a car park and ask randomers how much they think its worth, they all say far more than it actually cost.

Do it in an E28 5er and they'll call it a banger. They are seriously old now.

E34s (esp in touring form) are lovely looking things with classical styling. However they still look old to the average person on the street.

Do it in a nice E39 that you've picked up for about 1k and the answers will be quite different.

    Agree entirely.

I suppose its the old styling on the E34 that both makes it look wonderful to us but old to people who don't know what they're talking about.

Mines a e34 540 v8 in cosmos black grey leather, no rust anywhere and resprayed both sides bonnet and bumpers a year ago. I did try and sell it but someone wanted me to give it to them so I kept it sat on our drive along its stablemate Audi A6 estate

I had the 2.0 litre version (in the later E39 they used a 2.2litre engine I believe), and it was amazing how smooth, quiet and refined the engine was. It didn't lack pace either (we did one stretch in Italy from Verona to Modena at over 120MPH - and we were one of the slowest cars on the road), and could be very economic if you were restrained.
I still like the styling of the car, very classic, subdued lines, and the interior was a very nice place to spend many comforable hours.

    These cars certainly age well.

  • Dont sell it. My Oh sold his V40 T4 last year (needed some work) I have never seen a man so gutted when it drove past a few weeks ago, looking as pretty as she ever did

He bought a Mondeo, and he hates it:o

I've got a BMW 540 v8 £42k new now worth £2500 on a good day the cars immaculate inside and out just touching 100 k on the clock all the history MOTs etc top end 155 mph and 5.5 secs 0 60 been chipped and custom stainless built exhaust
Still with the sound effects when it kicks down into 2nd touching 80 mph and the back trying to overtake the front occasionally makes the MPG eye watering has gone down as far as 6 mpg on the poota steady it will see 22 MPG
Only used as a weekend car and not very often either
The wife goes rather quiet in it and looks abit on the pale side

Had one of those (not chipped) and was best car have ever owned - was worth peanuts when sold it. Engine brought a smile everytime you pressed the loud pedal

Great buy for someone doing only a few miles a year

Definitely going on my list of potential cars to buy when I graduate. My plan is now to buy something like that, or a Merc 300TD etc that'll take veg oil. Because I'll be able to afford to buy and run something like that, but won't have the capital for something that's like 10k. Though reading through this what's the point of spending that much at all?! What I really want is a 730d.
