+ another.
2nd hand 5-series is the best kept secret on the planet. I wouldn't drive anything else. I've spent 15K in 15 years on 3 different 520i SEs. No repair bills, just wear+tear/maintenance. Bomb proof.0 -

Too damn right they are, mine cost me 3k 9 years ago, replaced radiator and water pump, and head gasket, seat belt for mot a few years ago, full lpg kit fitted in the first year for 1k, it owes me nothing, even if it is only worth 500 nowPlease forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
How are petrol prices killing off old £700 cars..?
Is this one of those "lets spend £££££s on a brand new car to save £s on petrol" ideas?

Which is exactly what the intelligent buyer will do, it's the fools that go blindly chasing after small cars without doing the maths first. It's a great market for me
My car, a Vauxhall Vectra on an 04 plate cost me £3000, a same year basic Yaris would have cost me £7000. That give me over £4000 to spend on the additional fuel consumption.
Now according to http://www.fuelly.com/car/toyota/yaris and http://www.fuelly.com/car/vauxhall/vectra
My 34mpg Vectra (30 when temps drop below freezing) won't have eaten through that £4000 yet and ive owned it now since 2008.
So even if your friends BMW does just 20mpg, it's still a worthwhile buy for the thinking man (or woman).
Stop feeling sorry, go out and buy a big car
Of course 100's of people will this and simply dismiss what I say, because social influence has been drilled into them that small cars are best for fuel economy and 4x4's are best in the snow, and they will never change their minds no matter what facts/figures you show them.
I agree - we picked up a lovely Jaguar 2.5 v6 sport, fully loaded for a pinch of the price of a small eco friendly car. We love it and these days neither of us do a long commute so mpg not so important to us as it would be to someone who travels miles to work and back.
I also run a proper Jap spec 4x4 for towing - again picked up for a fraction of the price of a soft roader with a small engine - no one wants the big juicy cars anymore so there are some real bargains out there at the moment.
PS the Jag is better in snow than the 4x4!!!0 -
Yes, exactly!
Almost...McCoy wrote:I can think of sadder things to be honest.
Well, like someone is broke....
They decide to to change the 'gas guzzler' for a NEW eco car... don't actually do the calculations because they really want a new car and the MPG is just an excuse ....
They then take out finance they can't afford .....

I've got a BMW 540 v8 £42k new now worth £2500 on a good day the cars immaculate inside and out just touching 100 k on the clock all the history MOTs etc top end 155 mph and 5.5 secs 0 60 been chipped and custom stainless built exhaust
Still with the sound effects when it kicks down into 2nd touching 80 mph and the back trying to overtake the front occasionally makes the MPG eye watering has gone down as far as 6 mpg on the poota steady it will see 22 MPG
Only used as a weekend car and not very often either
The wife goes rather quiet in it and looks abit on the pale side0 -
