Biasi boiler shennanigans

We have an old Biasi boiler and the heating works but the hot water doesn't. The plumber came and readjusted the pressure but the water still comes out tepid. If you run the hot water the boiler doesn't fire up, but if you turn the thermostat up and fire the boiler up that way it does heat the water, but not very realiably. The plumber has said the problem is the electric board and that he refuses to touch it. He will however send me a quote for a new boiler! I don't have a spare £2k kicking around, and also don't want to have to pay another £65 call out fee for another plumber! Can any of you help?

  • It's a Biasi 24S
  • Sorry to tell you this but Biasi boilers are rubbish. IMO

    Was this "plumber" gas registered?
Did this guy look like he knew what he was doing?
Sounds like divertor valve may not be operating fully.
Just wondering if you have the manufacturers instaructions, it has a brief fault finding guide at the back, have a look and see if it looks like the board has gone.
A straight swap wont cost 2k by the way, approx £1500 maybe less depending on manufacturer.
  • Thanks for that Uncle Bulgaria, yes he is a qualified plumber and is well thought of locally. I think he just doesn't like dealing with Biasi boilers!
The boiler he was suggesting replacing it with was a Vaillant. I have checked the manual and can't really see our problem in there, as I don't really understand the language.

A qualified plumber IS NOT a qualified RGI?

  • the website says 'We are Members of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineers (MCIPHE) and registered with Benchmark.' there is more on his card but that is on my desk at work

What Mr Ted means is being a qualified plumber doesn't mean he's ok to mess with a gas appliance unless he's obviously Gas Safe Registered that is? If he is the site should list a Gas Safe Registration No. I'm Plumbing and Gas so to speak but I still get called a plumber! The difference is being legally allowed to mess with gas.

Not exactly, too many registered and unregistered "mess" with gas

Its about time more "worked responsibly" with gas :(

  • True. Point taken.
  • Could i just lead you back to my original query? (I would really love a hot bath :)). From what I have described below, would you say that our boiler could be fixed or not?

Personally, I'd get a second opinion.
The fault you describe could be one of 5 different faults, none of which are DIY repairs I'm afraid.
You will need an Engineer who is not only GSR but also familiar with combi fault finding so I suggest using your time selecting the best man for the job as opposed to diagnosing it via the internet.
Whilst I understand you're reluctant to cough up another call out fee, you have to be pragmatic about it as that's the only way to get the fault repaired properly.
