funnily enough though, my friend has continued to use her ex's name in every other way since, some 8 years later.

My ex wife has done the same. Said she preferred it.

It wasn't the keeping the ex's name that I thought strange but reverting to her maiden name on her health docs but keeping her previously married name for everything else. when she changed to her maiden name for her health docs i presumed everything else would follow.

Shame you got the village idiot at the bank - I'd probably just go in again and make sure you see someone different, and if there's still a problem ask to see the manager and suggest a little staff training is in order. People change their names for all sorts of reasons; not just divorce.

I think it's rather presumptive to make assumptions about the reasons women do not change their name - they might have lots of reasons other than making a feminist point.

I didn't change my name when I married because I'd always thought it was an odd idea to change even from a little girl. My name is my name, I like it, it's not everyday common but it's familiar to everyone so no problems spelling or pronouncing it. If my ex-husband had had a cool and funky name I really liked (you know when you meet people and think 'what a great name!) I might have changed it. But he didn't. He has an unusual name some people have never heard of. It also has two variant spellings, and two variant pronunciations with the 'wrong' pronunciation being more famous because of an actor. So virtually no one gets it right. I didn't want all that hassle. I didn't like his name much. So I kept mine.

Likewise recent ex (we didn't marry but if we had) had a foreign name that I've never known anyone, anyone at all, spell or pronounce correctly.

He even had a problem with the police once when he was pulled over in a random trap (they were pulling over every third car or so) as his surname looks like an odd spelling of a woman's first name. Say, for example, it was 'Clayre'. They looked up the car's records and insisted it belonged to, and was insured in the name of a woman called Clare. They thought the records had mixed up the order of surname and first name, and it definitely belonged to this mythical woman. He ended up having to do a 7 day wonder and taking all his records into the local police station to prove that he, Mr X 'Clayre' owned the car and not a woman called 'Clayre X'.

Seriously, why would anyone voluntarily get into all that?

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
  • Just curious by one comment and how it is the "conventional" think to change name to husbands when marry so what about civil partnerships between men/men women/women? just curious do they double barrel it!
