My Sis and Windows 8

Thanks Guys. Plenty of info, and links to pass onto her.0

Don't user the IE version that is tiled to the start menu (Metro). It's a stripped down browser with no plugin support for things like Adobe Flash. Instead, she needs to click on the desktop tile and it will take her to the familiar desktop. In the bottom left will be the IE icon we all know and love.
That will work as normal0 -
Windows 8 - Click on the desktop tile and it is Windows 7,0

Ok Thanks again guys. Am about to phone her up again for a session which I assume will be aimed at getting her a working email account. Despite your above help, which I am very grateful for, at the point where her machine asks her to set up a Microsoft account, how does she actually say, no thank you, and then continue on her merry way?0

I wish I had seen this thread yesterday. Got the dd a new laptop with win8 on it, and I was as frustrated as you :rotfl:
For some reason, it kept disconnecting from wifi and just wouldn't work as it should. After about 2 hours of playing with it, got online from the traditional screen, and went from there, then everything else seemed to fall into place, was totally weird.... I don't think I'll be updating my O/S anytime soon and stick to my XP as long as I can :rotfl:4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
Mazza, I have now had an hour and a half on the phone. We are still struggling to get any form of a Microsoft account for Sis.
I think I will be starting my weekend drinking early today!!!!
I bet Windows 8 is sweet when one understands it.
I do have to say, I can't fancy touchscreens for anything other than an Ipad. Wouldn't one have to be continually wiping greasy finger marks off the screen while watching sport or whatever?0 -
DD already had a ms account for xbox and phone I think. So she was a wee bit used to the lay out of win8. Didn't opt for a touch screen lappy though. I would be the same as you :rotfl: Although, I've had touch screen phones for a few years now and never had any problems with them, just don't think I fancy something monitor sized to poke and prod.
BTW when she got her windows phone, it acted in exactly the same way for a few hours. I think it must need time to settle in or have updates running in the background silently, although the task manager showed nothing.
Hope you get it fixed for her, cos it did seem easy to use from the win screen rather than the tiles. I still don't like the store thing and all those tiles though :rotfl:4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
At the moment, a Gmail account seems to be covering email for Sis. Also pointed her in the way of an "Office" lookylike as a free download to cover letter templates. That may require quite a lot of careful perusal of the terms, during said download. Thanks again for all your comments and help.0

If it was OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice you won't need to worry.0
