You can 'create' a new installation CD with the patch pre-installed ... I believe I followed these instructions to do it a few years ago ... http://money.mvps.org/faq/article/630.aspx

It's worked well for me over several re-installs , including Windows 8!
  • I have always found it impossible to move the categories with each entry when exporting and importing to a new computer, this time as there were 8000 entries I had to find a way and used the number field to copy the categories into and then copied them back into the category field using tools..replace.

FYI, there is a slightly convoluted way of running old programs on Windows 8; you can install VMware Player and Windows XP within it; this will give you a "virtual" computer running in a window on your PC, and will be compatible.

You do need a Windows XP licence though, but they can be had very cheaply (or even via the case sticker on your PC if you've upgraded the OS).

If you only use it to run that one app, then the threat of viruses is greatly reduced, and it can run its own MS Security Essentials.

This thread is 10 months old, and was solved on the last page using a patch from Microsoft, no need to faff with virtual machines.

Sure - it was a general comment about using old software, rather than a specific solution to this particular issue.

JulyKnot, I have been reading your posts re MS Money, I have a 2007 version which was working fine, my computer then crashed a couple of weeks ago due to a virus. It has been rebuilt but now I cannot get my money back ups to work, I reloaded MS Money disc with difficulty. I notice that you have got yours working please could you give me a step by step guide on how to get my back up working, I have been using money since about 1998 so you can imagine how much I have stored on it!!
I am desperate for help, I am not computer literate, I can use one but do not understand the technical side to it.
    Hope someone can help me.
    thank you

You should be able to use the Restore Backup option under the File menu ... if this isn't working then your backup file may be set to read-only, or it is corrupted sadly.

If you right-click on the backup file in explorer and go to properties at the bottom you should see the read-only tick box, un-tick it if necessary and then see if that will work.

Failing that I'm not sure what you can do. Has the original file gone for good ?

You say that your using MS Money 2007, the latest version released in the UK was 2005. After you installed MS Money from CD did it download the updates? I have MS Money 2005 with all the updates and it shows the version number as 14.0.120.1105.

You can download a FREE version of MS Money 2005 with all the updates - if you go to http://blog.garethjmsaunders.co.uk/a...2005-for-free/ and scroll down to "Conclusion" there is an option to download the UK version.

Follow instructions given by Pikeyp and if you still have problems reading your data there is a Microsoft Money Standard File Repair utility at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902466

I am using Windows 7 not windows 8, I'm not sure if it makes any difference.
