Microsoft Money and Windows 8

Should I have any difficulty opening an old file saved on external drive?

Installed Money ( I think 2004?) without problem.
It seems to let me create a blank file too.

But when I try to open an existing document, I get a message saying it will create a copy and then a blanket error message saying either couldn't locate or read only or don't have permission to change it or drive is write protected.

Checked the external drive with Windows 7 machine and had no trouble opening.

Can anyone think what might be the problem? Any success stories with MM and W8?

Run Money in compatibility mode (choose Windows XP or Vista) and see what how that behaves

When I right click the app, it shows an option to run as administrator. Is that what you mean?

Type compatibility mode into your Windows Explorer search field.
    Not the same as Administrator,
MS Money is not otherwise compatible with W8.

I'm still getting my head around W8. Couldn't work out what the Windows Explorer search field was.

You say not compatible, yet I can open a blank file and can also open the sample file within program files so I'm confused.

Link below got me encouraged as the sample file showed that my version did not contain a patch but I can't see where or how to update to get the patch

I certainly wasn't prompted to update as suggested in the article

    Should I abandon or persevere?

What you need to do, is to open the sample file (found in the Microsoft Money directory at "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money" or create a new file. Then check the version number again. At this point, if the version number is wrong, Money will want to download an update (if you are online).

Have you done that while online?

    What is your money version?

This is and old program and Microsoft may have pulled support and shut down the patch servers, they did shut it down before.

    My version number is 14.0.120.730
I am on the forum so internet appears to be ok.
I opened the sample file but no prompt to update received

looks like the end of the road for MM. Pity.

why not copy the file locally and work on it there, then copy it back
  • I will get my old version out and test it here.

One last thing, try unistaling money, reboot computer and re-install and see if patch tries to download following the above instructions from a fresh install.

But I did a search and it looks like microsoft has closed down the server patch.

    Google: "14.0.120.730"

    EDIT:
Self-contained UK Money 2005 file including all available patches. Replaces all MS Money UK 2005 installation discs. Usually solves "Money cannot locate the file because it's a read only file or you do not have permission to change it" error message.

    Look here: Money 2005 UK - QFE2
