Most suitable New laptop for me.

Options
Hi everyone - posted a while ago about my laptop screen going weird on me - got lots of good suggestions of how to fix it but nothing worked and it's driving me mad.

was hoping someone could suggest a good new laptop for me - pretty cheap (very skint self funding student here!). I just need it for uni work really - not bothered about gaming or anything fancy. just something that is newer and more efficient than what I have now (Acer aspire 3690) - with a fully working screen!!

Thanks

Sarah :)

    Toshiba Satellite C850-101 £203.94

You can spend another £8 to £15 to put another 2GB or 4GB RAM module inside(very simple), but it will work as it is.

    What is your budget?
  • Thanks nifty - will definitely look into that one.

Viscount - to be honest as low as possible, as long as it does the job! obviously don't want something super cheap that is going to pack up on me!

If it's within budget, buy it now. You will have up to seven working days after delivery to think about it/try it out.
If not right for you, they will accept it back and give you a full refund.
  • when it says "refurbished" - what exactly does that mean?

refurbished means its second hand and has a had a going over by someone. What that means is anyone's guess. If i'm refurbishing something it will mean a complete format and reinstall.

Cheap laptops are a problem. I've never really seen good cheap laptops, you end up compromising somewhere and you end up disatisified. old and low spec comes to mind.
Reburbished will cost usually up to £250 and that isn't really that cheap. Dell will sell cheap new laptops for £370 which are pretty decent.

I would be very tempted to fix your old one, or if you have the space get a cheap desktop off ebay with monitor for £80.

Had a quick look. here's one that would do fine.

They may have been previously sold, and subsequently returned to one of our parent stores and not put back on sale for cosmetic packaging reasons. This is often as little as a broken seal.
Alternatively, they may simply have incurred a minor amount of cosmetic packaging damage during handling in the day to day running of our business.
Some items may have been returned to our parent stores with a reported fault or where a customer had difficulty in using the product.
  • hmm - obviously I'd go for refurbished if it was something cosmetic, are you able to find out why it was returned? don't want to swap one problem machine for another!

needs to be a laptop I'm afraid so I can work anywhere, which is annoying price wise.

I am tempted to fix mine, but with me clueless as to what's wrong, and pretty clueless with computers in general, I dont know if a) I'll get ripped off or b) take it in, pay to be told it's wrecked!

on my last thread there wasn't really consensus as to what was wrong.

Cisco's post is closer to the mark. In this case, the machine will be as good as new. Only the packaging will be imperfect.
    It has a full warranty.
Don't be concerned. There is no risk, as you have exactly the same warranty as if you paid the full price for a new machine.

I'm using a Toshiba to make this post that I bought from them four years ago for £240.
