I recently suggested to a close friend to go for a job at my place of work, she was unhappy at her old job and was on a low salary. She got the job I suggested and is now earning an extra £300 per month. Her probation finishes at the end of the month and she has asked me to split the £400 referral money with her. What should I do?
My friend recommended me for the job I currently have. On employment she got £250.00 and after 6 months she got another £250.00.
She split the money with me and we had two fantastic days out.
I didn't expect her to (or know anything about the refereal scheme benefits) but she chose too.
I guess if you're askign the question, you maybe want to keep it, so do so. If you want to share then I think that's a good option too.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
Do you want to remain close friends? Of course she has a cheek asking for a share of the money if it wasn't agreed beforehand, but if want to remain close friends what choice do you have?Moneysaver127 wrote: »I recently suggested to a close friend to go for a job at my place of work,

Another vote here to ask her for your half of her pay increase when she asks again.
I am sure it will not be brought up again.
Unless you told her at the start "look there is a job going at our place and if I recommend someone and they get through I get money. So I will recommend you, and if you do your best and manage to get it we will go halfs on the cash".
In which case there is no excuse not to give it to her now.0 -
Blimey - your friend has more front than Selfridge's!
She wasn't happy in her job, you put her forward for one at your place and now she's £300 better off a month and she also wants a chunk of your referral fee?
Next time she suggests it I'd laugh heartily as though she's joking and say "Ha ha nice one! How about we also split the £300 extra a month you're getting since I put you forward for the job."“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”

I think she has a cheek too. Several years ago I was referred for a job by a good friend, for which she received a bonus. I wouldn't have dreamed of asking her for any of it!!
Keep it, and enjoy it. You shouldn't have to buy friends.0 -
I think it would be very helpful if the OP came back and explained a little more about the situation:
Was this money split discussed at the time the OP's friend applied for the job?
If so, was it agreed that the OP's friend would be given half?
Was it a serious suggestion or a jokey comment?
How will she react if the OP says 'no'?
Will the OP be that bothered about potentially losing a (close) friend?0 -

And then what? The friend thinks she can ask for anything and get it?
You should never have to buy your friends.0 -

The other side to that is this - does the friend think it's worth losing Moneysaver127's friendship over half the referral fee?0 -
What a cheeky cow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Assuming that this wasn't agreed at the start, tell her where to go. Or do as others suggest and ask for half her pay rise. :money:
Seriously - you told her about this job, she's now in a better job and £3,600 a year better off. She should be treating YOU to dinner to say thanks!!!! :eek:Get to 119lbs! 1/2/09: 135.6lbs 1/5/11: 145.8lbs 30/3/13 150lbs 22/2/14 137lbs 2/6/14 128lbs 29/8/14 124lbs 2/6/17 126lbs
