Did the seller mention on the listing that her items were from a 'pet/smoke free home'..? I ALWAYS state this on my listings and I ALWAYS ask the question before bidding on anythng...;-) I have to I have allergies in my family.
I too have had items that smell of smoke and its vile..!!!
My Mom is a smoker and often gives me items to sell on Ebay. I have put these items in my garage to try and air them but to no avail...Once things smell of smoke there is no removing it unless the item can be washed !!! I have had to leave them in my garage until parcelling up to dispatch as I couldn't stand them in my house !! The smell never went away at all ! would make sure I stated that they came from a smokers household on my listing I don't think it's fair not to...
I would contact the seller and ask if she would refund..Even offer to cover the return postage....If not cut your losses, bin it and learn from the mistake...Remember always ask the question before bidding ;-))

I've got a one year old and a lot of the info given out at the birth says if someone has smoked make them change their clothes and wash their hands before holding the baby.

Same here, I would barely even allow a smoker to touch my children when they were babies.
