It was in a mail bag but there was definitely a strong smell of smoke which wouldn't come from a mail bag
That's the whole point, a lot of the grey mailers smell exactly like fag smoke

If it didn't smell of smoke, would you just wear it? Would you not have it cleaned anyway?

As SharkyGeorge says, when buying from eBay there is always a risk with second hand items - you may feel they smell a little.

In a lot of cases, it's not a bad smell, just the smell of a person's home that might be different to the smell of your house.

But sometimes, they can reek, and it's not just the grey mailing bag.

I like to buy jigsaws on eBay. A few months ago, a jigsaw arrived in a black dustbin liner ( never a good start). As soon as I opened it a really strong reek of cigarettes hit me - the whole jigsaw stank.

I had to keep the lid off for two weeks and keep it near an open window as often as I could to air it, and Febreeze it, until I could do the jigsaw

I gave it to a charity shop afterwards, I couldn't risk selling it on eBay.

As already advised, I think the OP should give the jacket a good airing to get rid of the smell.

  • a good airing takes away smell of cigs, sorry i disagree, I have unfortunately found that stale smoke smell is only removed by washing an item, or BINNING IT!

If its a leather jacket etc that is impossible so smell will never leave and some items cannot be washed or aired due to size and hence, the smell will never go as some fabrics are more porous and items like this example,

...someone I know purchased two leather sofas that were on a smokers home despite being cleaned and wiped to remove the slight whiff of smoke, soon as sunlight came through to her livingroom window, well the smell was amplified to ten times worse she hadnt noticed any whiff in the sellers home but she knew the lady had smoked but hadnt thought it would be as horrible as it was, with some wiping and spraying, she tried in vain to get the smell away in the end she had to give them away to someone who smoked , may as well return as you will never get rid of second hand smoke smell and plus , ok so it is very slight, but there is cyanide and poisonous chemicals associated with smoke and if you wear an item and cuddle a newborn baby it has been proven that they can inhale the very small amount of chemicals

Cos smokers like each other and dont mind the smell, they should buy and sell to fellow smokers and add a note to listing ps i smoke, please consider this before purchase, as I seen it on a handbag listing before and bodyswerved it!

Yep, you'll never get rid of a smoke smell. I smoked years ago, stupidly in my car. It's been years since I had one and the car has been valeted several times over but as soon as summer comes and warm sunlight hits the seats it stinks :(

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

lock all us smokers up like criminals why don't you :rotfl: my mum smoked throughout the pregnancy and my childhood and I have no health issues. I also can't stand the smell of stale smoke and don't like all other smokers :D

OP, if you're really not happy that you cant get rid of the smell I'd return, although as others have said it could be due to something other than smoke. That's unfortunately one of the risks buying on eBay.
  • I would want you to do a "bodyswerve" with my listing with a user name like that.

These people that like those creepy looking dolls must have more money than sense to buy them things and really have something missing in there lives if they spend stupid amounts of money on them. But never mind I am sure they all go round to each others houses to ooow and aaaagh over the latest over priced patheticly frilly outfit they just bought cos they all like each other.
Do you see how stupid I am making myself look?

There is actually something in this i'm afraid

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8503870.stm

I've got a one year old and a lot of the info given out at the birth says if someone has smoked make them change their clothes and wash their hands before holding the baby.
