can work in reverse as well, saying that you'd rather use S.A. based networks as orange charge too much (and hence need unlocking) would mean that it's either losing out on your potential cash... or unlocking and having the person use Orange. Naturally the original poster *may* be able to use Orange however if he's got the phone unlocked he doesn't *have* to use Orange.... :) contradictions ahoy i know... but give me chance, i'm having a long day at work here ;)

We don't have a network in S.A. so Orange will never make anymore money out of this customer. Anyway the Orange group work independantly so even if you were going to France to use Orange they still wouldn't do it.

fair enough, but the whole point was to actually blag a free unlock from orange, not to talk about the whole structure of gsm networks in south africa. interesting read mind! :).... hold up, if there's no orange presence in S.A. then it's probably best picking up a sim there and using it as i suggested earlier.

There is no chance of a free unlock, as already said. It is also possible that they ask for the balance of the contract rent paid upfront. And as you are already abroad you may find, as I did once they realised, that they suddenly come up with reasons why it may take up to 6 weeks to get the code

probably best to get a cheap phone and local sim

I'm sorry but your posts are completely confusing me.

If the original poster had been using the phone in South Africa on Orange (ie. using another network over there but with their Orange SIM in the phone and Orange making money through roaming) then there would be no need for them to get their phone unlocked.

If the original poster wants to get a different SIM (South African network) when they are out there, then they would have to get their phone unlocked to allow that SIM to be accepted in it. Orange would gain nothing from this so they will not unlock the phone for free... where would the business sense in that be?

You seem to be under the impression that Orange will somehow gain from them using another SIM in their phone and will unlock it for free due to this... this is not the case.

So to reply to the last bit of your post quoted above, yes they may be better using a South African SIM as this may be cheaper than roaming, but they would have to pay Orange to unlock the phone for them.
