Value for money Washing machine/dishwasher

Our current washing machine (hoover) which is 4-5 years old only works on certain programmes so getting ready for a new one. Been looking at Bosch but it seems after researching they are not as good as they used to be and the price probably reflects this as they are about the same price as a beko/hoover. Heard Miele are good but not had one so can't comment.

Also I am sick and tired of washing up. I work fairly long hours and time is limited so anything to save a bit of time and effort, so looking at getting a dishwasher but again which one? They are a minefield. We have been looking at Bosch again and seen a couple for around £289 which is about what I want to pay. Is it worth buying a Bosch or just get the cheapest?

They say you get what you pay for. Thing is most things are made in china so does this still apply.... makes me wonder.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

  • Bosch products get very good reviews in Which? Both for performance & reliability.

I have a Bosch dishwasher - nothing to dislike about it. Its never broken down (6 years old), used daily.

Bosch appliances used to be made in Germany - not sure if this is still the case.

Siemens is a good make - more expensive than Bosch.
Siemens & Bosch owned by the same company.

Miele - a superior German brand, again, they get good reports in Which? Both for performance & reliability. Expensive. I saw an ad in the paper recently that they were offering 10 year warrantry (parts & labour) on their washing machines.

    Previous washing machines I've owned:

Hoover - broke down after a few years use.
    Hotpoint - poor cleaning
    Servis - poor cleaning

Current washing machine is Siemens (3 yrs old) - cleans brilliantly, lots of stained clothes to deal with (young kids). Superb build quality. Cost alot more than my previous washing machines but I notice a big difference with performance.
  • If you only want to pay under £300 then Miele or Siemens isn't really an option.
Basic Bosch is pretty cheaply put together but comes usually with 2 year parts and labour warranty

Value for money as your post suggests for me maybe means stretching budget to get a Siemens with a 5 year parts and labour warranty. Miele will be above that price point again although one with a 10 year full warranty I guess is worth considering if you can find it

John Lewis for reference looks pretty good here as £75 cash back and free 5 year warranty on this one so £475 inc full 5 years warranty.
If you want stainless steel then this one is cheaper after £50 cash back at £398 but doesn't include full 5 year warrnty (although you can buy one for £80).
"Cheap" Miele here at £471 but only 2 year warranty whioch i persoanlly wouldn't choose as Miele parts and labour can be eye watering.
Also consider John Lewis own branded as 3 year full warranty as standard.

Obviously other places to buy just using JL as reference although don't forget they will price match with any one who has a actual store

Might also be worth having a read over at ukwhitegoods forum. Many washers are made in the same factory (Italy) and rebadged to be sold on as premium brands.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • Thanks for the advice. Will probably go cheaper end Bosch to be honest. Will check out uk white goods forum.

We do quite a bit of washing with my 21 month old daughter making most of it!

Which is also why I would (and have) go for one with a 5 year warranty on the washing machine. We are heavy users so don't expect machine to last 10 years plus as its on every day pretty much

Dishwasher I would go with basic Bosch

There isn't many options with 5 year warranty. JL had some cheapish Samsung's with 5 year. My sister went for one, but bear in mind it's at least a 2 week lead time.

I went for an LG in the end. Only 2 year warranty, but the direct drive drum, bearings and motor parts have 10 years on them. Figured this was a good compromise.

Avoid the Electrolux brand and associated pseudonyms (AEG, Zanussi, John Lewis, Ikea), they're naff. Had a £600 AEG washer drier die after 3 years. Net is riddled with similar reports.

Not as standard there isn't but as said you need to look out for the special models that are included.
Specialist forums are full of all sorts of models where problems are due to the nature of what those forums are.

Don't forget many people simply don't look after the washing machines and other white goods. How many do regular maintenace washes as recommended in the manuals for example. How many pay attention to weight limits on washing machines

Bosch, Siemens and Neff are all part of the same big company. Miele are just Miele; a family run business. They don't do re badged stuff.

Personally I would save for a couple more months and get a Miele which is likely to be a better long term investment and save you money in the long run.

We have a Bosch dishwasher & a Bosch washing machine.
    Both have worked well.
Mid price range, simple & cheap to repair if needed.
Miele seem to me to be vastly overpriced but thats just my opinion.
Heck....just looked on the net....some of the Miele machines are over £1300 !!!!!!
