The 30 mile trip should be enough to clear it out.

Its not 30 miles she does in one go but 30 miles worth of short journeys.

If there's one way to block a DPF, the way she is using the car is definitely it.

Indeed...miss Motivation maybe needs to go for a git of a run on the motorway...just a steady 55/60 for how long? 10-20 miles maybe? People buying modern diesels are never told about the technology thats on board and how to manage it. And why should they be? If they were told all that it might worry them.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

As already mentioned sounds like DPF and it possibly was performing a regen cycle. Take it out for a long run and use plenty of high revs.

Diesels do not like lots off short journeys. TBH it defeats the whole point of having a diesel if the majority of journeys are short ones.

So this is why many taxi drivers (who rack up hundreds of thousands of miles) use diesels, specifically to do short journeys.

Yeah that kind of makes sense doesn't it?;)

I'm busy having this argument with the MIL she is looking at a Diesel and in my opinion her mileage is marginal at best to justify a diesel 10k-12k/year.

She is wanting to buy new and hopefully buy a car that will see her out (but it has to tow), the plan was for a Sportage (7 yr warranty) in petrol but someone has turned her head and she now thinks she wants a Tiguan 2.0 TDi.

I'm almost at the stage of saying carry on but I just see problems in 4 or 5 years.

Mot'd the Panda again this week never a mention about emissions but next month is the Cherokee and if I don't start planning ahead it will be a nightmare to get it through it's emissions as it is every year!

A lot of "older" diesel taxis are unlikely to have DPFs so wont matter. If they buy new the taxi firms are likely to offload the car before any issues arise, so again not an issue for them. Doesn't change the fact that, as the other poster mentioned, diesels with DPFs fitted don't like a lot of short journeys.
  • Had the same problem today, driving fine and then all of a sudden no power and chugging.......day off tomorrow so going to take it out for a good run.

If only I had known that the short journey thing was a problem......
My home is usually the House Buying, Renting and Selling Forum where I can be found trying to (sometimes unsucessfully) prove that not all Estate Agents are crooks. With 20 years experience of Sales/Lettings and having bought and sold many of my own properties I've usually got something to say ;)

Why is the fill up important? Did you put diesel in a petrol engine?

As to the supermarket fuel debate. Lets not go round that loop again.

    You cant tell some people

I dont understand why there are so many dieslels on the road as so many are used for short jouneys by elderly people, who only go to the supermarket and back

    guess its the marketing.

I drive a diesel and do about 30000 a year

My wife drives a petrol and does about 4000 a year

    makes sense to me
