Renewed Jul21v3 with STAY50 promo to get an additional £50 so £2-3 a week better off from that paid to EDF in 2019-20. Paul
  • Going through an absolute nightmare with them now. My mum (an OAP living alone) moved into a tiny bungalow and they have hit here with a bill for 7 days of over £200. She kept the same supplier as her old house so the 7 days is just how long the switch took after the move in date. They insist that it is a read meter reading (not an estimate) even though my mum didn't provide one and no one has been round to read the meters.
But here's the real kicker, the readings they claim are 100% real from over a month (the billing period) ago are higher than the actual meter readings now!!!! Spent over an hour on the phone with a "computer says no" customer services guy (after first call was hung up by the automated system). Have escalated to a complaint so I will keep the forum updated, but this is the worst experience I have had with one of these companies and as you can imagine terribly stressful for a very isolated OAP in the middle of a pandemic.

I'm going through something similar with EDF. Moved house, only with them for 10 days over which the property was empty and they want to charge £150!! Finally thought I was getting somewhere with a bill for £26 but now told the original amount was correct and based on my new supplier's readings! No way it can be as I haven't given those readings to the new supplier. Have escalated today so we'll see

Did you register with EDF as soon as you took possession and give them the opening readings?  You may be paying for the previous occupant's usage if they gave a final reading that was too low, or didn't give one at all.

Just had my final bill from EDF as SOL now that I have switched to Octopus.

They have managed to get the billing period and opening reading wrong, and haven't applied the credit for signing up to a direct debit.

Never used EDF before. Are they generally easy to deal with to get this sort of thing corrected or am I likely to end up taking them to the Ombudsman?

I have today received a  more forceful message from EDF re a smart meter.

The messages before were more of a request to have one.

There are those on the forum who think EDF are hopeless.
There are also those on the forum with the same opinion of pretty much every other supplier.
If you contact EDF customer services (I'd recommend web chat) you can probably sort it out, but it might take a few calls.

My understanding is that suppliers cannot force you to have a smart meter. If, however, the Ts&Cs of your tariff required you to have a smart meter then the supplier may move you on to a tariff which does not require one.

That used to be the case, and several Secretaries of State assured Parliament that no-one would be forced to have a smart meter.  This was promised as recently as 2019.  However, it seems that Parliament was misled because BEIS has torn up this promise and threatens that all new builds must have smart meters and existing life expired meters will be replaced with smart meters 'unless there is good reason not to do so'.  It remains to be seen whether any reasons re deemed to be sufficiently 'good'.
Ofgem used to make the same promise, but scrapped it when BIS reneged. Ofgem's present advice is hopelessly muddled: it repeats the BEIS threat that new builds must have smart meters and existing life expired meters will be replaced with smart meters 'unless there is good reason not to do so' but immediately contradicts itself by saying that 'You can choose not to accept an offer to have a smart meter fitted.'.  httpimagesdigitalspycoukforumsmiliesrolleyesgif
