Gas condensing boiler central heating with direct hot water
Starting a new gas/electric supplier
EDF "Simply Fixed December 19" (December 18 to December 19). Gas/Electric. Direct Debit
Gas: 16,000kWh
3.582 p per kWh
Electric: 2,600kWh
15.929p per kWh
Plus VAT
Meter Standing Charges: £28.32
Total: £1,022
Previous 2 years: -
1. Sainsbury's "Price Promise November 17". (Nov 2016-Nov 2017).
a) Gas/Electric
b) Direct Debit
c) Service OK
d) Renewal price was a big increase. I had used much less gas/electric than I projected
2. BreezeEnergy: "Breeze Fixed 1 Year Saver (Nov 2017-Nov 2018)
a) Gas/Electric
b) Direct Debit.
c) Service OK
d) Statements (online) stopped after 6 months, so I had to rely on my own monthly meter readings and calculations
e) Renewal price was a big cost increase from Total £875.73 (including £120 Standing Charge)
to £1,164 (£200 Standing Charge!)
I hope to post here my monthly meter readings and costs

Thanks for the feedback
Reading the various posts about home energy costs, they vaguely state the amount of gas/electric in kWh or £s. ("just had a bill for 25,000kWh or £500)
Someone asked how can they plan for the future useage.
I have been monitoring my home energy use for the last 40 years and experimenting
I am trying to help with awareness on how by regularly reading your meters and breaking down the results into average daily/monthly useage you better understand and plan
I would appreciate your comments0 -
. . . I would appreciate your comments
When the project ended I decided to continue taking my meter readings every week and used the data to compare with <Heating Degree-Day data> so that I could see how my consumption varied with the outside temperature at weather stations near to my location.
Hope you find my results over the past three years of some interest.
The red line represents my weekly gas consumption (I use very little electricity for space heating so left that consumption out of the data).
The blue line represents the weekly heating degree-day data (effectively how cold it has been - the higher the HDD figure, the colder it has been.Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

For the second time in 4 months I have had what brewerdave lists under C.) Incorrect direct debit setting.
I telephoned last week after having a lovely letter threatening a warrant to enter my property to fit a prepayment meter. I explained the situation that due to illness (depression) I very often struggle with admin / payments and was in the process of looking at getting someone else to deal with my accounts.
We had a lovely chat and an agreement to pay £90 or so from May 1st.
Naturally imagine my horror when over £480 disappears out of my account. So I phone same day, they've apparently failed to put a block on the whole amount - not sure that's how DD's work is it?
Was told it was too high an amount for CS rep to do, so a manager would auth and I would get a phonecall, 3-5 working days.
Here I am a week later, being told it can take up to 10 working days, and the manager was "a bit busy at the moment" and had I tried my bank? So I have, and they're getting me the money back hopefully by 6pm tonight so I can actually pay my rent!
Then the fight begins!Actually, yes I did.....but you miss the point that you should not have to keep ringing them because they sneakily increase (and significantly) the monthly DD. Inconsistent DD payments are horrendous to have to deal with. I couldn't plan. In 18 months I never paid the same monthly DD payment ever and every single payment, apart from the first, was higher than the agreed plan.Consumerist wrote: »Whilst I understand the sense in keeping abreast of your energy account, is there some point to publishing it all on a forum?
I use to obtain the degree days information published online each month, and it showed the relation with the home energy used.
I received my final statement this morning from Breeze Energy and it stated that I had used £14 extra on the £875 one year contract. The gas consumption had been more, but the electric a lot less, so balanced out.
I will reply asap
Thanks again, appreciated0 -
That's an interesting graph, I am looking at it now on a large monitor. I can see that the gas consumption followed the degree day data. I use to do the same with excel spreadsheets that produced graphs from my gas/electric meter readings and degree days.
I am retired now. My clients were commercial, industrial, local authorities, government etc and I specialised in the mechanical and electrical building services associated with the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC).
Mostly it was to do with staff complaints about hot/cold, sickness (colds/flu symptoms etc) and monitoring the energy use and producing reports.
I thought that MSE members might be interested in how their home energy bills can be better understood and hopefully help them to reduce their energy costs.

Switching from Scottish Power to EDF has been something of a disaster from beginning to ... well, it hasn't ended yet. The switch was agreed on 20 November 2018 and was complete on 09 December 2018 but actually getting the EDF account up and running and the Scottish Power account closed is still in process.
EDF says:You'll be glad to know your switch to EDF Energy is progressing as it should and we're now ready for you to give us your opening meter readings for your gas and electricity. Please do this before 17 December 2018 so that we can set up your account correctly.
My EDF online account says on the meter readings page:Eletricity: 732 You gave this on 10 December 2018
Gas: 188 You gave this on 10 December 2018
Yet EDF also says on that same meter readings page:As your new contract is currently being processed, we can only show limited information about your meter. You can still submit your readings using the form below.
Unfortunately we didn’t receive your meter reading in time. Don’t worry. We’ll agree an estimate opening reading with your old supplier to open your account.
And Scottish Power says:We’re waiting for your new supplier to give us the meter readings you gave them. They’ll use them to open your account and we’ll use them to create your final bill.
Hanging is £270.03p credit in my Scottish Power account and I don't think I can count on the final bill being produced and the credit refunded any time soon!
In conclusion: EDF? Most definitely not recommended!0 -
Did a search but could not find anything about EDF safeguard assist tariff, which I am on. Must admit with all their price changes this year it has been a nightmare to keep up with, but I found out yesterday that a friend who is on standard variable in same area, is paying 22.17p per day standing charge whereas safeguard assist is 28.96p per day, can anyone explain this please. Admittedly my kwh charge is lower but it does seem a bit naughty.
EDF have stopped their freephone numbers now as well, (more greed),will definitely be looking into changing supplier, been with them for over 40yrs. Just wish Zog would start electric.0 -

Here you are:

Safeguard Assist provides a capped tariff for customers who qualify for Warm Home Discount and are in years 6 or 7 of the WHD scheme. But as is often the way with energy suppliers when you get lower unit prices you pay a higher standing charge. No exit fees on that tariff so you can switch at any time.0 -
Be aware that buried in the tariff terms of conditions can be a clause which requires you to have a smart meter. There was nothing mentioned about this via the Energy Club switch tariff details nor in my contract. I am 3 months into the fixed deal but I fear if I refuse a smart meter they may force me onto a more expensive tariff. With £60 exit fees switching to EDF may have been an expensive mistake.0
