Toddler Problem - Help!

  • Have you tried putting an open nappy inside the potty (as a liner) and then sitting him on top of it? It's sitting on the potty but with the added comfort of "going" in/on the nappy.

As he's a boy, you might also want to consider sitting him back-to-front on the potty - the back edge is usually higher so facing that way around means the wee is more likely to stay inside the potty plus he can grip on to the edge for added comfort/stability.

Alternatively, some kids like those gimmicky potties - you know, the ones that are shaped like a throne or a pretend toilet or ones that play tunes, light up, etc.

no...will maybe give that a go. I was thinking of doing as PP says, leave him naked bottomed for a bit, and see what he makes of what you suggest

oooh... pingpong balls... fabulous fun to pee on in the loo for little boys..

standing to pee might be more fun for him.. tin buckets are fun, they make lots of noise.

My youngest boy was 4.5 before he was reliably dry during the day, we had great fun.

Mine got a jelly baby for performing in the potty for the first few days.. that works.. a little bit of bribery goes a long way ;)

Might try the ping pong ball idea for my 8 year old! Messy bu**er that he is.

My LO who is 2 likes to be held over the toilet doing a front facing wee, he's not too bad now but didnt like sitting on the seat at first.

2 is very young to start and lets face it its blumming winter.

Leave it till Spring and summer.

Put it this way, you get out of the nice hot shower on a cold night,
wrapped in a lovely warm fluffy towel and some swine comes along, drags this lovely warm towel off you and says, pee there........##

Think about leaving it till its warmer, he's only a baby
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I know the clean up can be galling, but you just have to take a relaxed attitude to potty training. It's best for all concerned.

There have been many good suggestions as to how to progress, but the best way to go is at the speed dictated by your toddler. Guide, encourage and reward him (sticker charts are always well received). And take precautions to limit the accidents.

This is just another development phase. It will pass. Successfully.

Ping pong balls worked for us coupled with bribery by way of chocolate buttons and star charts.

My experience was that the best time to aim for complete dryness is the spring/summer-bare bottom and ideally let him wee al fresco (in garden) to get used to the nappy-free feeling where it doesn't matter and no big clear up necessary (ie no fussing or commotion or having to get nappy out the way in a rush.) That builds confidence in knowing when and how long to the loo.
