Toddler Problem - Help!

My little boy just lately has developed an "issue" with toileting in his nappy. OH and I would find him having woken up, removed his own nappy and weed on the floor :eek: Or he will do all he can to remove his willy from his nappy. Would cry when he clearly needed a wee or a poo, and make a big fuss about being changed there and then

I figured, great potty training..get rid of nappies.

Big problem. He will sit on the potty with his clothes on, but not with no pants/nappy on. Tried sitting him on the edge of the toilet seat, no go. Been taking him into the toilet with me, and showing him what I am doing (he thinks its great) but still no go. The OH has also tried (and wee'd in the potty to show him :rotfl::rotfl:) but still DS will not do it.

Help!

You havent actually said how old your little one is.

My daughter in law bought a 'tolet step' for Lucy who is 3 in April.

No problem at all after this, she has to take this step everywhere with her. The toilet things dont happen with out it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Quick answer - if you want more, discuss with Health Visitor, Children's Centre etc.
Common issue, to do with understanding / wanting to toilet train, but feeling insecure without nappy. Your job is to move s-l-o-w-l-y from this stage to using potty / toilet.
Let him sit on the potty with a nappy & praise him for weeing in the right place (use cheapest nappies!)
Next step for big boys: put nappy on the potty, not on him (!) so when he sits, he can feel the nappy - praise!
Next step: kitchen roll / old towel /on potty (anything that pads it a bit)
Next step: bit of loo roll
As you go on, you will find his pace and what seems to be bothering him about the next step. You may find that he just takes a big leap and does away with the last stages.
For yourself, see each stage as a step on the journey rather than "not being trained"
    Hope that helps

toilet step is a good idea, it means your little one doesn't need to hold on to you or try to balance on the toilet, as he has his feet firmly on the toilet step while he's sitting on the toilet. My niece had one between her potty and toilet stage, she still is little so still prefers to use a step when she's on the toilet.

My DD never took to the potty at all, we just went straight to the toilet with her.
  • sorry, forgot to say he is 2

Thanks. I will have a look at toilet steps

Rather than sitting him on the edge of the toilet seat, have you tried a toddler training seat which sits over the toilet seat but with a smaller hole?

But - not that it helps really - I'd say don't stress too much about it. He's only little but he's got an idea so that is good. Apart from that you need patience and it will sort itself out in time. (If he is weeing on the floor, I'd get some washable mats to try to make your life easier.) My oldest daughter seemed quite scared about weeing in a potty (she'd hold on, jump up in my lap so she felt safe, then do it!) but they do get there in the end. The thing that convinced her was when a friend came over for the afternoon, they both drank lots of juice then both spent the rest of the afternoon in the toilet, but competing with her friend got her over her fear!

Mine just ran about without any bum coverings for a while until they got the idea, I think once your catch that first wee in the potty and they realise what is expected of them they don't actually know what they are doing.

Of all mine the 2.5 year old has been the hardest to train. She won't poo in the potty she will do it happily in a nappy or hold it as long as possible until she does it in her pants. She was forced to train as she is so big and wets so heavily she was out weeing size 7 nappies in half an hour!

The other possibility is his nappies are tight... when boys go to wee their willy gets a little bit erect, it may be this sensation he is finding uncomfortable so plops it out of his nappy so it can be free to pee. Having a poopy nappy must feel nasty, that goes without saying. So he may well be nowhere near ready to train but is just not comfortable.

There is also the possibility he got it out of the nappy to fiddle with it and just left it out when he fell asleep. ;)

You could also make using the toilet a game at first, put a ping pong ball with a smiley face on down the toilet for him to aim at, although he might not be tall enough at the moment for that anyway??

A toilet step and childs insert seat are good ideas, sounds like the potty is uncomfortable for him?

  • hmmm...thing is, I have caught him sitting on the floor, and physically removing his nappy and weeing. I am going to buy new nappies today, will try size 5s. Will see if I can find a step and toddler seat

    Thanks guys

  • He will sit on the potty with his clothes on, but not with no pants/nappy on.

Have you tried putting an open nappy inside the potty (as a liner) and then sitting him on top of it? It's sitting on the potty but with the added comfort of "going" in/on the nappy.

As he's a boy, you might also want to consider sitting him back-to-front on the potty - the back edge is usually higher so facing that way around means the wee is more likely to stay inside the potty plus he can grip on to the edge for added comfort/stability.

Alternatively, some kids like those gimmicky potties - you know, the ones that are shaped like a throne or a pretend toilet or ones that play tunes, light up, etc.
