Motion submitted to the STUC Annual Conference 17th April 2013 in Perth
Congress notes:
* Sponsors of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow include ATOS.
* ATOS has been the object of sustained campaigning by disability rights activists, for reason of its conduct of Work Capability Assessments on behalf of the Con-Dem coalition, with the goal of driving people with disabilities off benefits.
Congress believes ATOS should not be allowed to exploit the Commonwealth Games as a source of publicity.
Congress therefore resolves to:
* Instruct the General Council to write to the Board and Executive Team of Glasgow 2014 calling on them to cancel ATOS’ sponsorship of the Games.
* Instruct the General Council to write to Glasgow City Labour Group urging them to support the demand that ATOS should not be accepted as a sponsor of the Games.
* Support campaigning by disability rights groups against ATOS sponsorship of the Games.

There can hardly be a GP in the land who has not noticed the mess that we are being invited to mop up over the Government’s work capability assessments.
The programme to reassess whether people on benefits are fit for work – as contracted out to the French technology company Atos at a cost of £100m a year1 – is creating distress in patients and additional workload for practices as many people are told to ask their GP for a letter to try and support their claim.
We are asked to fill in cursory forms that give space only for confirmation of the diagnosis; barely any space to describe the impact of illness on a patient. A doctor recently wrote in the BMJ about how difficult she found the process; how much worse is it for patients who are unused to form filling and bureaucracy?2
The fall-out for ordinary people is immense. Many people who have worked all their lives and who feel guilt and shame at being ‘burdens’ on the state find the process of claiming benefits humiliating and degrading.
There are multiple harms created for citizens that are going unmeasured – the ongoing stress of the uncertainty of the process has profound impacts on many people’s health.
The costs of this are not being borne by the company running the scheme; the NHS is bearing the brunt of them.
Earlier this year, the LMCs conference called for the process to be scrapped, saying it should be replaced with ‘a rigorous and safe system that does not cause avoidable harm to some of the weakest and most vulnerable in society’.
It is not a fair system (and there is copious evidence of its unfairness) and its failings will be borne by the most vulnerable. The stress caused by its inadequacies will be pushed on to the NHS.

Update on Dad..... We think we have won:T:T The NHS MAY pay all of his fees, but if not it will only be about £35 instead of £3000 a month!:T
DD seems to think so. They are doing the panel review this afternoon, so we should know tomorrow.
Hopefully we will get the fees refunded too, but you never know.I Believe in saving money!!!:T

Hi all,
Had to go to work today, I still felt a bit teary about Baxter, house feels weird without him, but had to show the kids that life goes on, did finish early so I could be home before the kids, just in case they wobbled.

TTFTM - i,m terrified of anything medical - even when I has DD, an hour after labour (2 hours from first twinge to baby) I was up, washed dressed and hounding the poor nurses to let me go home, they relented just to get some peace I think .

£300/£1300 -
REDRUBY I know you can get malaria tabs online a lot cheaper but can't remember the site hun:o
Anyway (((huggles))) to all in need today :ADS2 used these when he bought his medication for South America a couple of years ago.
thanks both, I was aware that you can get them cheaper online, but the college advised us to get the more expensive ones, the girls last year who got the cheap ones, spent the whole 2 weeks chucking up, which would be misserable if you are away from home, and also if she did chuck them up, she would not then be covered for malaria, would rather not take the risk, but thanks ladies xx0 -
Hilstep- that's a result! We were "lucky" that due to FIL's behavioural issues he had to have specialised care, so he is in a NHS-contracted unit in a BUPA home, so no fees, the home may not have been our first choice in the beginning, however the staff have on the whole coped well with some of his behaviours in the past and got to know us and the fact that we are "picky", so he generally receives good care. Some of the care assistants have had their moments, but MIL soon sorts them out, in a less than cheerful manner at times;)RIP Iain

Hi everyone. Many thanks for missing me nmlc & Loulou. I had to stop posting for a while as I was spending waaaaay too much time on here and nothing was being done in the house and it was getting me down. The house now looks much better, not perfect but not so much like the aftermath of a jumble sale. I am now gradually tackling the cupboards and drawers - you know, what the eye doesn't see............
I'm on here as a reward for clearing out the airing cupboard this morning. I don't think it has been done since we moved in and I found some interesting things!
The Rev is away for three days and I realise how much of my time she takes up. I don't resent it, well, not much, because the work of a vicar is 24/7 and apart from all the reading, writing, visiting, meetings etc. it is emotionally draining. Or it is if you are conscientious and caring, which she is. Still, it's nice to be free for a bit to do my own thing, even if it's clearing the airing cupboard!
I've only read the last couple of days posts so fell really out of touch.
Islandmaid. So sorry to hear about Baxter. It's hard when you lose a member of your family. Give yourself space to mourn him properly.
Judi. I'm with you on the batteries. I keep a secret box with all my spares in and release them grudgingly. I try to top them up when I see any reduced but can guarantee that the one I need will be noticeable by its absence.
Hilstep. I'm doing the 5:2 thing as well. I find it easy, astonishingly, and have lost 5lbs in 3 weeks. Never done that before. Only another four and a half stones to go. PHEW! thank goodness it looks as though you've won the fees battle. Who are these people who can shell out £3,000 a month. Most of the people I know couldn't do that in a year.
Loulou. So sorry you are going through a tough time. Looking after a baby and a small child is hard enough, goodness knows, without any other stress. Have a virtual hug and know that we are with you in spirit even if we can't take away any of your problems. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could.
Ah, weaning. We have an hysterical video clip of Mia being introduced to a spoon and apple puree. After the outrage of have this hard plastic object being pushed into her mouth and having to spit stuff out, she finally becomes aware of the taste. The poor baby screws up her face and shudders from head to foot.
However, my DIL2B tells me that Mia's strawberry and banana puree is delicious poured over icecream. I think Mia missed out on that treat, but her Mum and her brother told her about it.
That's enough. I wish I could type faster.
x
Edited to add - Aw, Islandmaid, you missed me too. Mwah, mwah.I believe that friends are quiet angels
Who lift us to our feet when our wings
Have trouble remembering how to fly.0
