:confused::confused: Please dont shout at me but you are obviously all clever people I however am no. I think I get the gist of what I have to do and I hope that inside the pack I am going to buy tomorrow has full instructions!!!
I done the thing jzpop said to do and it says
    Microsoft Windows xp
    Professional version 2002
    service pack 2
registered to ???????? (the person I got the comp off of)
    then some numbers
    Computer AMD athlon (tm)
    XP 2400+
    199gHz
    256mb of Ram

So I take it when I go and buy a new version I ask for a professional one, he used to use it for work I use it for general could I change it or is it better to stay the same as it is?
    Thankyou for your help.:T

XP Pro is gonna cost you at least £60 from ebay and probably 3 times that from PC world.

Looking at the specs on your PC I would say it's a waste of money when you can get a recon with Vista (allbeit basic but far superior to yours) for £150 c/w 12 month warranty.

I'd carry on with what you have for now and don't worry about the updates.
If it bothers you then do as Devizes says and use Windiz ;)

With Validation package number 3 out you wont get any patches or updates and you wont even get media player now, especially against V6 online validation.

No patches or updates? Are you sure?

Anyway, here's another alternative until you get the problem sorted; http://www.autopatcher.com/

Microsoft have some sort of discount package for those caught in this kind of situation. Haven't got their number at hand.

afraid so mate i repaired a pc last friday night and the chap needed some new drivers and a bios update so i got them and i also pointed out that he wasnt upto date so he said go ahead and try windows update and he gets an error message, so i went to update and it came back cannot validate xp updates will not install, i have had this 3 times before with customers so i just do a search for wga and you can usually find a hack file called wgahack.exe then you just inform them to get a COA and see their jaws drop, and its irritates me aswell

I have seen on a friends machine that had a dodgy code that on boot up it gives a warning message that it doesn't pass the WGA, it can then set the display to 800x600 and 16bit color for every startup.

If the pc is running a little sloppy, removal of the old xp version and installation of the new could give the pc a new lease on life.

If you have the box on the splash screen when you boot (This copy of Windows may be illegal), you can get rid of it with loads of little tools or do the following (be careful not to delete any other keys, as messing around with the registry can mess Windows up):

    - Click on Start
    - Click on Run
    - Type regedit
    - Click on Edit and then find
    - Type WGA
    - Whe it finds an instance of it press delete, then hit F3 or Next to find the next
    - After you have deleted all instances of WGA and reboot, you will no longer have this box come up

    - There is probably a little script that does all this for you, but this is a way I sussed out thats works without harming ur PC.
  • then you STILL won't get updates and WGA will download the newest version again and you'll still have a pirate copy.
is it too much to ask for people to pay money for Windows O/S???
it means if it has to go to a PC shop for repair, you have your OWN GENUINE copy of XP.

Keep an eye on the Refurbs at https://www.medionshop.co.uk There is nothing worthwhile there at the mo., but I picked a nice basic machine with DVD writer etc for £150. Brand new, not a scratch on it. They've one for £180, but it's not worth it.
