Possible mis sold holiday? Help!

I booked my honey moon yesterday (26-01-13) to Sri Lanka in aug on the west coast, when I went into the travel agents I asked for a beach holiday for snorkelling etc but far away (Maldives, Thai land etc) she found me this holiday in Sri Lanka and was told it was a good place for snorkelling etc, so I returned home happy and got straight onto the laptop to read up only to find snorkelling is no good as the sea is rough this time of year and its dangerous to go in further than waist deep! I paid £500 deposit. What I would like to know is can I change this holiday and keep my deposit if I still use the same travel agents? (Every thing else about the place looks perfect but I love to be in the sea all day.

  • Did this require three posts?!

You will need to ask them. But if they want to be difficult they could probably turn around and say you didn't mention snorkeling just a beach.

  • Sorry for the 3 post was ment to edit not create more threads. can't find where to delete the others. Oh that's not good, yeah will call them tomorrow as there closed today. Just wanted abit of advise. I was happy with everything from start to finish apart from my request for a beech holiday for snorkelling.
  • Is there nowhere nearby for snorkling?

It might be worth doing a bit of research now, finding out where for a similar price has good snorkeling and presenting that when you go in. Don't rely on the travel agents knowing anything.

  • Only place advised to snorkel at that time of year is the east side of island which is 6-7hour journey so would be a over night stay in reality.

This really shows why you should do your own research before booking. You have a world of information at your fingertips rather than take the word of someone in a travel agent shop who probably has never been anywhere more exotic than Magaluf.

I'm not sure what your rights are in this case. All you can do is go back to the agent and ask, very nicely, if it could be possible to make changes to the booking. If another country isn't possible then maybe a different part of Sri Lanka. You could try the Trip Advisor forums for Sri Lanka for the best area of snorkelling if that is your top priority.

I cannot comment on Sri Lanka myself as I've never been there but there are countless places for snorkelling in Thailand where the seas are crystal clear and warm.

Why do so many people go to a TA book a holiday and THEN do their research when they get home.

Common sense tells you it should be the other way round (or not use a TA at all).

OP go back to TA and ask if they will change destination, they might but I guess it will cost admin fees.

Dont think you were missold though

Put the cart before the horse

    Meaning

Reverse the accepted order of things.

    Origin

The first reference to this phrase in English comes in George Puttenham's The arte of English poesie, 1589:
  • Ok yes I made a mistake I should of done some reaserch instead of relying on someone who sells holidays as a job! I'm not saying I want to cancel it altogether just if its possible to move destination as its not what I quite asked for, as I booked it yesterday do I have any rights to change my mind?

Who is the Tour Operator? I.E Hayes and Jarvis, Thomson, etc...? I know you booked with a travel agency but it really probably depends on what the operator says. Sometimes it will be Ok and sometimes not. You will really need to check with them to be sure if it can be changed or not.
    Happy :)
