Thanks Soolin. Unfortunately it doesn't say any of this in the email I received from PayPal, titled 'notification of payment received' or in the email from eBay saying I'd successfully sold the item.

The email from PayPal just says you have received some money and provides the address. Obviously that's where I made a mistake, but if someone asks you to send something to a work address, you don''t think much of it... well I didn't anyway.
This is a paypal email including advice re chargebacks:

Thanks for using PayPal. You can now send any items. To see all the transaction details, log in to your PayPal account.

It may take a few moments for this transaction to appear in your account.
This item is eligible for Seller Protection.

    Don't forget to:
    • Send the item to the postal address below within 7 days.
Please note: items delivered in person or to a different address are not covered by Seller Protection.
    • Use a trackable proof of delivery.
Find out more about Seller Protection

    Reversals:
Please be aware that your payment can still be reversed, (e.g. if it is subject to a chargeback), even after you have sent the item to your buyer. Complying with PayPal's protection programmes and following the trading guidelines, in our Safety Advice helps to protect you from things like chargebacks.

That's perfect and says all that needs to be said, I think.

My notification email doesn't include this information. So it wouldn't do PayPal any harm to add this advice to those emails too. Not that I'm trying to point the finger.

As inncocent as it was, I just lacked awareness in this instance. It's a horrible situation all round - for the other victim too.

It's not zillions of pounds, but it is pretty annoying. I'll get over it... one day.

MediumRob, you're not the first this has happened to and won't be the last. Its probably the number 1 scam tactic used by ebay criminals. Act quickly and get your money back and teach the criminal a harsh lesson

Recorded delivery or Special Delivery? One is not tracked ,the former, the latter IS fully tracked to post a mobile phone...and seems OP as seller will lose this case. Can't believe it is genuine...

I on ebay, had got 4 tickets to see a comedian, not a very well known comedian and my brother and his wife cancelled didnt fancy it, asked me to sell their tickets on ebay. It was an address 50 miles away. I was paid at paypal the buyer was new to ebay but had 5 positives.

I posted the item the same day using SD and a signature was obtained at the address next day.

The gig wasnt due to take place for another 6 weeks.

4week pass after the sale, I got the same email off paypal a chargeback on the cc but I fought and successfully won by scanning and emailing paypal my original PO receipt which shows the EXACT address paypal gave me including post code was used.

My paypal balance was plunged into negativeness, it was about £58.00 as I recall. -£58.00. I had to add £58.00 to continue to use it!

However after around 10 days, paypal removed the minus balance, and I was plus £58.00 because I done exactly as advised, only used a fully tracked method, with online proof of signature, post within 7 days ,only post to address given by paypal. keep receipts.

A month further passed and they had tried to have the decision overturned but this time, it was the buyers CC vs Paypal so I didnt hear any more back but the case notes were updated .

    Status
Details:We have completed our investigation. After reviewing the details of this case, we have determined that it is unlikely that we will be able to successfully dispute this chargeback. This matter has been resolved and no funds were debited from your account for this chargeback.

    They (paypal) took the hit.

PS I attended the event with my friend and the two seats remained empty all evening. They obviously bottled it....

Where there is an ebay item... there is a scammer lurking...

I disagree, I don't think this is common. Most scammers tend to go for a quick sting they can't afford to hang about. It seems odd to me that these scammers , if that is what they are, waited this amount of time.

I have had bank charge backs before now that were accidental, a buyer a few weeks down the line can't place what the PayPal debit id for so panics and does a chargeback. The most recent one I had I phoned up and spoke to and they were incredibly embarrassed and I admit it took some sorting out with PayPal as they were unable to easily stop the claim. I was protected anyway but it felt wrong to me as I had sold in a small category to someone I had sold to before and had sold something to since.

I don't know whether the Op has been scammed but if he has then this has a strange pattern to it and I think it well worth spending time on this and trying to get the truth of it. I also wouldn't give up with PayPal , you might just get Dublin on a good day who won't double check the address

  • I had a LOVELY Paypal rep Geordie chap say on phone to me " no worries ,it is very rare to have a chargeback, but be patient you are fully covered" in fact I was on to him for around 20mins while and I totally trust Paypal and their systems.

I emailed sellers who had left a + feedback for my scammer, and they all said they had been chargebacked too, but hadnt been able to counterclaim, their items were 2 jewelled cat collars, something small like that so they had just used first class post and the items totalled £14 which paypal took back off them so they were not chuffed. This was a business seller with tens of thousands of feedback and this was their very first ever chargeback .

It is rare but if you intend to sell a valuable item, use Special Delivery ...or cancel the transaction if they ask it to be sent to an unverified address, a PO box etc, rather than lose £340!

I am sorry, I have no sympathy for anyone who sends mobiles to "A N Other " address, Paypal have to treat everyone with suspicion until the seller can prove they followed protocol as laid out in terms and conditions of their user agreement, closing credit cards and shutting bank account after buying the groceries, lol, as if paypal would just say "oh dear we didnt get our money back", they have more power than that!

I have a 6th sense the phone seller isnt being totally honest !

It's a strange one. Paypal seem to send 2 different emails when payment is made, not sure how they choose which one they send, must be something to do with where the funds come from.

The first email with subject "Notification of an Instant Payment Received from xxxx" this has all the payment protection info on it.

However the one with subject "Notification of payment received" does not have this information.

    very strange.
if i had known then what i know now
  • A seller who is using Paypal on ebay etc should ALWAYS log into Paypal, double check the details on there, not just read the email notice which can even be faked by scammers who usually can't spell very good....all the information is on the transaction page and green text for verified address.

As a PS never use recorded delivery it is not worth the paper it's written on, always use RM's SD (or parcelforce ) to fully track your valuables and pay the excess for more cover.

To be protected against a bank chargeback all you need is proof of postage, you do not need recorded or special delivery.

All my items under £46 go standard 1st or 2nd class, airmail or standard parcels

Are you sure, well ,in the case of my chargeback, Paypal said her credit card had asked me to provide PROOF that the item was DELIVERED , not just posted,to the address they gave me , showing the house number and postcode, and also they insisted I send photographic evidence as well as online ref number at Royal Mail. It wasnt Paypal as you say, it was the person whose Credit Card had been used .

11.9 What is “Proof of Delivery”?

Online documentation from a postal company that includes all of the following:

    1. A status of “delivered” (or equivalent) and the date of delivery.
    2. The recipient’s address, showing at least the city/county or postcode (or international equivalent).
