I don't believe that Littlebookworm is winding anyone up: several things he has said in his posts indicate h is genuine.
Anyway...
I had a Homebuyers Survey. It cost me 320 pounds (sorry - I know I said 220 before, got that wrong!). The headline survey look at structural defects that will need fixing in the next 6 months (ie, items that immediately need looking at). They quoted me 475 pounds for a headline survey, but recommended that I go with the cheaper Homebuyer Survey because my flat was built in 1994 (ie, it was relatively new).
If I were you, I would go with what they say - a Headline Survey is a good compromise. They will pick out any major problems, and you don't have to spend money on a full survey (useful if you are buying anything that needs some work).
You might like to get other quotes - I did at the time, and I found Habitus to be a) helpful , b) they didn't try to sell me something I didn't need and c) they were the best price. Please don't feel that you have to take my recommendation, but I did find this company to be very good and would recommend them to others.Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. - Jefferson0 -

I think HIPS are more relevant to the house buying board but here is good thread on HIPS for the benefit of those who genuinely need to know

I have decided to get the headline survey and I am going to take every-ones advice and get some quotes from solicitors, but I asked my brother to ring round because I would not know what to say after ther had given their price and I needed top ring another one.
