If you want to take a chance with that crew, you can take a look at this COMPAQ CQ2910EA for £166.39.

You can give it a good run through for a few days, before deciding to keep it or reject it.

Don't do it. You are liable to end up with an old piece of junk.
Buy an old XP machine now and the OS will no longer be supported next year.
Best to stick with the options suggested here. Refurb your old machine or buy online.

Obviously a not so old Windows 7 machine would be better. I just gave an example from one shop's website. Nifty's suggestion above seems a good price but Windows 8 so probably a learning curve required.

As OP hubby did with Curry's no harm in looking to see what local shop has available.

would my 10 year old hp computer work quicker with more memory and just that to be added to it, or would i then have to start adding other stuff.

thank you for your help, as i'm very much not technical,

    thanks

Before you make a decision on new purchase, you have nothing to lose by following Closed's post above to -

    a) speed up machine - the topic is written step by step so you you should be able to follow it

    b) price up memory upgrade

A 1GB RAM(DDR333/400) module for £15 and a clean up(re-closed) or a clean install will make a world of difference.
It is not ten years old. Perhaps eight.

I would even consider a PCI Express graphics card if you were going to upgrade to a decent HD monitor.

closed is our resident expert of clean ups. His guides are neat and simple.
Say his name three times and he will appear.... :D

A clean install will also speed things up, but is a little more complicated.

    it's got avg on it

Removing that might help. Not sure what would serve as suitable replacement though...

thanks for those replies, but he's had a look at cleaning it up, and thinks that he would get stuck.

And he's decided he wants to treat himself.

I'm not sure at what i'm looking for in cheap, and i'd like one with windows 7 if possible.

so i'm back to the drawing board.
