I have a laptop, but hubby uses the old, very old desktop, but we need a new one, this one is over 10 years old, and we've decided to get a new one.
It's just for him to surf the internet, and for him to read up about sport and stuff.
we've been looking at this one

or does anyone know of another one that's a bit cheaper that will do the job just for surfing.
thanks

What about a monitor?0

I've just been browsing the Dell site before I came on here. Quidco is doing 5% cashback and an 11% discount code on Inspiron desktops but I think it ends today (Sat). There are a couple of Inspiron 660 for under £350 before discount/cashback with free delivery. They are intel iCore3 but I don't know if that is better or worse than Celeron - one at £339 has 500gb drive and the one at £349 has 1TB.0

I'm sure that she asked for cheaper than £280....0 -
we already have a monitor.
£350 is a bit above my budjet,
it's just going to be a 2nd computer that hubby uses when he wants to surf for a hour or 2 on his one, a bit of on line banking, holiday searching.
But no gaming or anything like that.
thank you0 -
The cheapest new would be to buy this simple Zoostorm PC for £150 and to install your own OS. Perhaps Windows 8, costing from £25.
So £175 would have you a new system.0 -
If you want to stray away from desktop computers you could consider an chromebook - that way it wouldn't have to be glued to a desk to use the computer. Decent chromebook from curry's for £229 - click hereCurrent Debt

So I don't think the upgrade would be valid on that PC which doesn't seem to have any version of Windows.
There is a version of Windows 8 which can be installed on a new PC but it's considerably more (I think Amazon is currently quoting around £70 for the cheapest version) and also you'd need some technical knowhow to install it, plus it wouldn't come with any support.0 -

Was it really worth the energy?
The upgrade will work and activate on the computer regardless.
Technical knowhow to install an OS? What are you talking?0 -
Does it have to be Windows? You could save a bundle putting something else on it.NiftyDigits wrote: »Technical knowhow to install an OS? What are you talking?
Strange as it may seem, there are still people in this world who don't know how to do everything.0 -

Are you sure? I tried precisely this a couple of days ago (purchase Windows 8 for twenty five quid, then install it into an empty VM) and although it installed, it refused to activate. I had to install Windows 7, for which I have a license, into the VM first, and then upgrade it using the Windows 8 media and key. Googling around says that the installation of the upgrade kit requires that there be some Windows <8 entrails on the machine. There's some messing around possible using regedit to make things work, but apparently that doesn't always work.0
