What's the idea with the third eyelid thing? My vet did tell me but I forgot! hoping my girl doesn't need it but it's likely.
Also do they need a general anaesthetic for it? If so that worries me cos my girl is nearly 12:(0 -

They stitch the third eyelid over the eye to protect and nourish the area where the ulcer used to be. If they don't do that, then the eye is really susceptible to major infection.
They do give them a general anaesthetic. My dog is about 8 years old, not as old as your doggy, but still.
I'm sure if your dog does need this op, then the vet will do everything to minimise the risks. Hopefully she won't need an op and her eyes gets better without surgery.0 -
Cool thanks for the info.
My girl makes me proud, she is so stoic about pain and stuff. Hate seeing them suffer though, the thought of the eye stitching thing really freaks me out
Keep us posted on your pups progress !0 -
My dog had his eye stitched to protect it after he had an operation for an ulcer. I really can't say it bothered him much after the first day or two.Cool thanks for the info.

Much better to have it stitched than leave it open to infection.
Hope they both get on ok.0 -
I guess by Sunday he will be up and about and coping with his eye and having the collar on.
My dog always wears a harness when I take him for a walk, but I meant to put his collar on when he went to the vets. However, I put his harness on him & now I can't take it off cause it slips over his head, so he seems a bit miffed that I have left it on & he's not getting taken for a walk.
Dollardog..how soon after the op did you start cleaning your dog's eye?0 -
I can't remember now, I had two, the last one was because of an ulcer but the dog I had before had to have one eye removed due to a tumour.
As far as I can remember, I bathed them gently the same night because I think they weeped a bit. I used boiled water which had cooled.0 -
If they get a bit weepy, its easier to clean before it has dried hard,0

Well my dog has had his first check up since his op & the vet said his eye is looking ok. Due to get the stitches out on Friday. So, fingers crossed the operation has worked.
Had his first little walk out as well today. Didn't want to take him too far & had to make sure the walk didn't include walking past bushes. He has a tendency to stick his head right into the bushes & I didn't want to risk him getting a branch poked in the eye.0 -
Had to pull appointment forward to today as my girl's eye isn't getting any better at all. Guessing they will recommend the op your pup had0
