Could I ask a couple of questions about SKY

Options
Hi,

Been thinking about getting Sky for a while and, whilst looking on the site today, I made contact with an online adviser. He offered me the Entertainment Extra Pack (£26.50) at half price for first 6 months and also the £100 M&S voucher. I am thinking of going for this but just wondered whether I would get the standard HD channels such as BBC One, BBC HD and ITV HD without having the HD pack. I have an HD TV but do not want to pay an extra £10 or so to get HD. I believe I would also get the catch up service at no extra charge - I guess I need to buy their wireless box to use this. Overall I am thinking this is quite a good deal but would be grateful for any further advice if it is possible to get better. I am only looking at TV as they do not cover my area with broadband yet. Thank you very much

Yes, you'd get those PSB HD channels without paying for the HD pack.

For the Catch Up and On Demand content, you can use an ethernet cable to connect to your router if it's close enough to your TV (mine's behind the TV).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I think they are giving me the standard sky box and not an hd box so I would still get the basic hd channels on this? Thank you

You won't receive any HD on a non-HD decoder.
However, it's my understanding that Sky are sending HD enabled digiboxes as standard now. You'll need to contact Sky to confirm this.
It's certain that you won't receive any subscription channels in HD unless you pay for High definition.

sky no longer sell non-hd decoder's to any new customers, whether its a non-pvr or a pvr it should have HD functionality.

Be aware thou if you don't pay for the HD pack you won't recieved ITV2 ITV3 or ITV4 in HD

If you buy a good Humax freesat box for around £220 you get all the freesat channels and bbc1 HD, ITV Hd etc. Also record, rewind, pause, etc. etc.

    And no subscription charges ever.

We have one in our conservatory and its brilliant.

We also have Sky HD plus in the house but it would be gone in a second if my OH didnt want the sports channels. Thats the only reason we keep it.

    Really worth thinking about.

Im in the same situation - having just bought a new Smart tv with HD and 3d, I want to make the most of it. I was told by the online rep to get the SKY entertainment extra package but just looking at the conversation transcript, I did ask her to allow for HD but she hasnt so that will be an extra "£10.50. However, it does give the programmes we would wan, like Sky Atlantic and the nature and history programmes. , free sat doesnt have much more than freeview does it?

They also offered me the half price sub for 6 months, free boxand installation plus £100 M and S voucher. I wonder if going through topcashback would give an extra lot of cash back or whether that would not be allowed.

Many thanks for all the info. We already have HD built in the TV and a separate pvr for freeview. Was considering sky for the extra channels and the better catch up stuff. However now thinking we might give it a miss and stick with freeview. Thanks again.

hethmar - the deal you were offered is widely available. The FULL sky package (sports, movies, HD) is available with 6 months free broadband, free box, free install etc plus £100 M&S vouchers AND £207.50 cashback through TopCashBack. Other packages also available with good cashback. Also, if you do decide you want to get Sky if you drop my your e-mail in a PM I will send you a recommend-a-friend which you should be able to use as well. This would gain both of us £75 of vouchers for a choice of retailers.

Thanks, but the full package sub would be huge wouldnt it, something like £68 a month? Also we dont watch sport at all - movies we seem to have done just about all those we want to see at mo after 5 years of lovefilm subs :) I dont need the broadband as I am happy with my talktalk broadband with free any time phone calls. Have a humax pvr already for recording progs.

    Will have a think.
