Remote Assistance for a Vista machine, from an XP laptop, through a Netgear Router...

I've got a vista pc at home which my parents aren't used to as yet, so I need to talk them through some things.
However, now it's just becoming frustrating, I wondered if there's a way to control their PC using my laptop (which is away from home). That way I can see their desktop and they can see what I'm trying to describe to them instead of me driving myself to a breakdown :rotfl:
I tried XP to XP remote assistance (with the old PC which is now dead) and there were issues with the netgear DG834G router firewall, is vista any better for kicking this down?
I did see somewhere that there's some remote assistance gadget for the sidebar
Please help for the sake of my sanity!!!

if you turn on upnp on the dg834g and the router at the other end, remote assistance should work, unless you have a software firewall blocking port 3389.

upnp on left hand side
tick turn upnp on.
apply
also it might work better if you use messenger rather than email to send the invitation.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

We use logmein it offers free remote access and is accessed through a member account so you just log into your account online and you can have multiple pcs associated with yor account - you just load the software on your host pc - very secure and safe, came recommended by our corporate IT support - you can pay for the upgrade version which is about $30 and this lets you print remotely and transfer files too - we have it installed on over 80 pcs in our office and we havent had one issue with it.0

I've got them to install this now, but when they send me their code, mine says connecting and hangs there, then it went and crashed and wanted to report an error to microsoft.
I've clicked to restart it but it's not appearing.0 -

make sure remote assistance is enabled in xp http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/remoteintro.mspx and also in vista
Select Start > Control Panel.
Click System and Maintenance.
Click Allow Remote Access.
Check the Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer checkbox.
Click Advanced.
Check or clear the Allow this computer to be controlled remotely checkbox.
Select a number of hours as the maximum an invitation can be open.
Check or clear the Create Invitations That Can Only be Used from Computers Running Windows Vista or Later checkbox.
Click OK, and then click OK again
also clear the dns, click on start, run then type cmd then hit enter then type ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter and see if the dns resolver cache was flushed this should be done on both machines by default Vista wont show the run command so heres how to show it http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/vista/vista_run_command.htm#Where_is_the_Vista_Run_Command i really didnt want to type that lot0 -
If you are talking about crossloop. It can take some time, a minute or so to first connect, but once going normally works ok.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

dps: I'm using crossloop, already tried windows remote assistance but as per usual microsoft made it more complicated than it needed to be :rolleyes:0 -
Ok I would do this for remote assistance if you think about using microsoft, firstly download and install on both pcs the latest version of msn messenger http://imagine-msn.com/messenger/launch/en-GB/ then once installed make sure you bothe have msn passport https://accountservices.passport.net/ppnetworkhome.srf?vv=450&lc=2057 then add each other as a contact and then the person who needs help should then contact the person who can give the help from msn messenger, i thinks its tools remote assistance from messenger.
also just make sure anf firewall has been set to allow msn messenger and remoate to gain access you may have to make an advanced rule.0 -
only the other Pc needs the code in Crossloop, you need to type their code in your "join" panel box..the green button, they need the "host" button"Ex forum ambassador
