No MOT doesn't necessarily mean it isn't road worthy, and having an MOT doesn't mean your car is road worthy - only on the date of the check.

If you hit someone with an MOT but on bald tyres you will be in more trouble than if you smashed someone with no MOT but a perfectly road worthy vehicle.

I can't remember the last time I did my tax on time, always a few days over. Not through lack of funds, I'm just a rebel.

And no, this will not have any bearing on insurance.

No ,but the type of driver who does drive without one makes it far more likely

Someone I kind-of-know (work colleague of partner) has been driving around without an MoT or VED for about a month...
Automatic £80 fine for not taxing or sorning* after a month. Mot will be needed to tax the car.

    *Possibly a made up word.

As the OP says, as soon as she passes an ANPR car/cam it may well flash up that she has no MOT (depending on the ANPR filters).

Most RPU patrol cars now have in car PNC, enabling many more checks to be done without troubling comms. Like the OP, I wouldn't be able to run my car a day without getting tugged for it, so her time will come.
A short period out of MOT out will often just be a verbal warning. Over a month for me would be a ticket or summons. If there are clear con&use reasons why she has no MOT, she'll be reported for all offences.

I used to work for a guy and we were running around in a van that hadn't been taxed for months, we suspected that he didn't have a valid MOT for it, it certainly hadn't been serviced. Must have passed hundreds of cop cars, even a vehicle inspection point, was expecting to get pulled over, nope, got waved on.

Van broke down in the end, knackered engine, cambelt snapped most likely. So it was a costly mistake in the end.

As for teh OP, I'd give the friend a pretty stiff talking to.

Did you do the same to your employer?
Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.
