Makes me cross...rant alert

Someone I kind-of-know (work colleague of partner) has been driving around without an MoT or VED for about a month... Now, I know that what someone else does doesn't affect me so why be cross, but should she have been/be involved in an accident with no MoT does that not invalidate any insurance, with serious consequences for her, and the other driver (which could be me, or you)? Sorely tempted to dob her in, for everyone's good. I know if my MoT was a day out of date I'd ping an ANPR before I got to the end of my street!
And yes she did know it was out-of-date but because she's a widow with 2 young kids she seems to have this mindset that's it ok, and she'll get round to it...rant over.

  • If she's driving around without an mot and tax then the car could very well not be roadworthy. If she can't afford to put the car through its mot and tax it then she probably can't afford to keep up the maintanance of the car either which is a danger to any other person/car on the road.

She may also find if or rather when she gets pulled over that her insurance won't be valid and she will find herself in a whole load of .... through her own making.

Lack of MOT and Tax will not invalidate third party insurance in most cases.
So you will be OK if she crashes into you.

Not if she hits you whilst doing 40, her brakes having failed, with you as a pedestrian...

I found my sister did this when she was short of cash... couldn't believe she'd risk herself, others, etc.

As the OP says, as soon as she passes an ANPR car/cam it may well flash up that she has no MOT (depending on the ANPR filters).

Most RPU patrol cars now have in car PNC, enabling many more checks to be done without troubling comms. Like the OP, I wouldn't be able to run my car a day without getting tugged for it, so her time will come.
A short period out of MOT out will often just be a verbal warning. Over a month for me would be a ticket or summons. If there are clear con&use reasons why she has no MOT, she'll be reported for all offences.
Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.
  • The irony is that I know she can easily afford to pay tax/MoT...paid cash for a nearly-new car, personalised plate etc. Like I said, what she does is her affair...just grates she can get away with it because she's 'a single mother' and plays that card well (although she does have a partner) and a good private income...only works Part Time for pin money....and incompetently as well (my better half spends as much time putting right here errors as anything else) Anyone else know someone like this????

No MOT doesn't necessarily mean it isn't road worthy, and having an MOT doesn't mean your car is road worthy - only on the date of the check.

If you hit someone with an MOT but on bald tyres you will be in more trouble than if you smashed someone with no MOT but a perfectly road worthy vehicle.

I can't remember the last time I did my tax on time, always a few days over. Not through lack of funds, I'm just a rebel.

And no, this will not have any bearing on insurance.

... and especially not if the momentum carries you both into a petrol station, which then explodes in a massive fireball, incinerating two passing nuns taking a family of adorable kittens for an afternoon stroll, shortly before the nearby tower block, weakened by the explosion collapses to the ground, crushing a school bus parked outside.
