Karen, I've been doing this for about three years now, having moved from a bottle+ a night, every night and lots more at parties. I've always allowed myself drinking days at weekends but found Monday-Thursday hugely tough to start with and then a tendency to play catch up at the weekends. Using various distraction techniques and soft drinks and 'hour at a time' tactics plus this lovely, supportive board I got used to it. I still have the odd wobble but I tell myself (sometimes literally) I'm not having a drink if it's meant to be an AF night.....and I generally listen.;)0 -
Thanks everyone for the advice - I seem to do much the same i.e. checking on the calendar for social events etc. but for some reason I always seem to end up drinking Thursday through to Sunday - although I have to say that last month I did have one Friday & one Saturday where I didn't drink which is completely unheard of for me
- this thread must be showing me the error of my ways
.
I do agree with you Maman that even though I do always drink at the weekend I have cut down remarkably since joining you lovely people :A.
Fruball - I see exactly where you are coming from - that is how I felt about 'allowing' myself so many 'drinking days'.
MrsDee - it is the drinking at home that I have the problem with - as I am the only driver in my house I don't drink when I go out (unless I am picked up or we walk somewhere which, as we live in a very small village, doesn't happen very often ).0 -
Always around the time of my sober anniversary I wonder to myself if I could ever be a moderate drinker. I would love to be like Maman and others (thinking of Pippi and her recent posts) I envy them that they can control their drinking. I wonder if I just tried again to drink maybe I could be like 'normal' drinkers and stop when I wanted. Could I be in control of my drinking? It's a dangerous thought process and one that I need to remember I gave in to many times when I had stopped/cut down for a while before I stopped for good.
Last night I sent a friend a text just asking how she was. She has been having a tough time at work. We are fairly 'new' friends having been colleagues for a while and I had taught her children in the past. She admitted to me that she had had a drink problem but no longer drank. I confided in her about my own drinking habits or lack of. As time went on she had said she had a glass f wine on a particular occasion and again I was left thinking 'Well if she can do it so can I' but something stopped me finding out.
Anyway the reply to my text message shocked me to my senses. She had 'hit the bottle' Tuesday afternoon, having a glass from the bottle of red intended for the casserole. Long story short, her children ending up calling an ambulance for her as she went on a total bender. Ended up in hospital. The repercussiions of that are still rippling through many lives.
So I post this story as a reminder to myself that I cannot risk finding out if I can 'try again' with drinking. Some on here will not fall into this camp. Lucky you. But if you think you might, please don't screw up like my friend did.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Morning all
Congratulations to all those that managed to resist temptation - to those that didn't manage it last night then today is a brand new day
3/12 AFD's for me please Shaggy - although I keep looking at other peoples targets of 20+ and think that I am a bit of a lightweight only declaring 12 for the month. I set mine at 12 thinking it was being realistic but in a way I am accepting the fact that I am 'allowing' myself to drink for 18 days which is not very good .
I be interested to know how the rest of you decide on your targets?
Have a good day everyone
When I first started on here many moons ago (different user name) I remembering setting my target for 8. After a few months of not being able to manage 8 AF days it began to dawn on me that I might have a bit of an issue!!!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. ShaggyxWhat do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -

I would like to join your thread. I have been going totally alcohol free on my own without tellng anyone or having a final plan and have managed 25 days AF. Eventually I may just cut to only drinking when out, as it's drinking at home that escalates my intake for the week. I had gradually built to drinking wine every night of the week.
Wouldn't say it has been easy, been a very hard habit to break for me. I think having the forum and the support of others will help.
So far have 6 AF days for Nov. Nov target is 30 days AF. Somehow I don't feel ready yet to start drinking in a moderate way and don't want to risk planned alcohol days, it may just set me right back to a month ago!!!!and Good Luck!
