what happens is I run the diagnostic report

this then comes back every time stating

    No ipad/ipod/iphone found

the next step is the diagnostic report, I assumed the details at the bottom

No FireWire (IEEE 1394) Host Controller found.

    **** Device Sync Tests ****

No iPod, iPhone or iPad found.

where the main reason/problem behind my lack of connection ???

    Thanks for your help/advice

The no firewire error is the cause of your issue, the diagnostics are correct in that your laptop probably doesn't have a firewire port (very few devices do now) but that is of no consequence for connecting an Iphone as they don't use firewire, I assume the only reason Firewire is mentioned as it was used for connecting some of the original Ipods before Apple switched to USB.
