OK , now I am flying blind now, I don't have an iPhone (but a iPad) what happens when you connect it to a different USB port from the one you normally use ? does it say installing driver ? or when you go to Devices and printers does it show your phone ?

laptop has 3 usb's, make's no difference which usb I use

each time I do a fresh install of itunes, and connect to any usb, yes the drivers can be seen to install

it has shown the iphone under Devices, usually under Portable devices, G drive (although its not showing now)

Hmmm , now I have confirmed your diag report with mine and they are the same , so I am really clutching at straws now what is your Antivirus software and is it the same as the daughters?

That's an odd one then, as firewire is pretty much dead, so not having it shouldn't really cause any issue (IIRC all the IPOD's for years have used a USB connection with a proprietary connector at the ipod end).

A quick google suggests that the message in itself shouldn't be a problem (it sounds like Apple haven't thought to hide it now it's no longer used).

Does the Iphone connect ok to another machine at all?
If not at a guess you may need to do a reset on it, but my experience with Idevices is pretty much limited to sorting the wireless connections for my nephews.

that is the crazy thing my daughter has the exact same laptop running the same software and antivirus (windows essentials)

    which makes this so frustrating

when you suggest reset, reset what, as previously I've been advised to uninstall itunes and do a fresh/new install of itunes, which I have done numerous times
