Buyer telling me how much he wants to pay for postage!!

Sold an item yesterday and the postage charge is exactly £3.15 (having sold the same item many times before) he reckons it must only cost about £2 but is offering to pay £2.25 (so generous...)

My postage is for second class so cant downgrade it anymore than possible - and in the listing I have only actually charged £2.99 and confirmed this is for second class!

Its not like he's a new ebayer, his feedback (private) is over 12000 at 100%! He wants me to send him a new invoice with HIS new postage charge on it and then he will pay!

Have I missed something here? Terms on my listing are crystal... I've sent him a message back telling him I make NO money on p&p and the terms are clear.

Has anyone else had this happen? Getting well miffed about Buyer power!!

Sounds like a chancer. It would be tempting to tell him where to stick it.

Could you email him a photo of his parcel on the kitchen scales and a link to the RM website?!
  • Tell him to pay as advertised on the listing, and if not, you'll just raise a NPB claim.
  • Yeah right up where the sun doesnt...

Just find it incredulous, its not like I'm charging £4.50 to send a baby's bib or something, its the minimum price the item can be posted for and I dont even charge that in the listings!

If you dont like terms dont bid!
  • Absolutely agree re buyer power but the trick here is to remain absolutely calm.

State that those were the terms and conditions of the listing and had he had any concerns about the postage charge he should have contacted your prior to bidding. As it is, he has accepted the terms and conditions of the listing and the actual item costs [XX] to send by [insert postal method].

Stick to this line calmly and politely and eventually raise a NPB claim if he still doesn't pay.

Sometimes buyers on eBay make my blood boil though!
  • To be fair I was very calm in the message back to him, explained the terms clearly stated, explained that I couldnt reduce postage any further (because to be fair if I could have I would have, say 1st to 2nd if the buyer wanted to save postage cost), but its at Rock Bottom!

Just infuriated me that he was telling me the terms on which he would then make payment because all the other buyers who purchased yesterday have all already paid... which could also lead to a single journey to the PO just for his item!!

I assume you are charging for 2nd class packet plus recorded as that equals £3.15. A lof of buyers object to recorded as it basically means you are calling them a scammer, however that is something he should have realised before he bid.

Explain how your £3.15 is made up and leave it at that, but be prepared to have your stars hammered for suggesting they are a scammer.

You start by saying a lot of buyers. Who knows where you get the evidence for that. Surely not this forum with it's tiny membership?
Then followed by be prepared for suggesting the buyer is a scammer.
You've created your own mythology. Time for a break.

I am aware that we are a small percentage of eBay users on here, but anecdotally users do seem to find stars are lower for those that use recorded. That is exactly the same experience as those that post on the community boards. In fact some of our regulars here have had issues.

The only reason for using recorded is because you don't trust buyers, it has no other purpose at all as it is not an enhanced service nor does it offer additional insurance. So whilst there is even a small percentage of buyers that object to the inference of them being a scammer, sellers will have issues.

No one needs to read my posts, and I am sure many don't, but we should not pretend that we are not aware of any issues at al, however few, associated with using recorded.

Absolutely, many sellers still believe post and packing is also transport, shoe leather and a nice latte on the way to the Post office. Unfortunately those sellers make is very difficult for those sellers who only charge actual stamp price plus a few pence for packaging.
