Real-life MMD: Should I sneakily keep some of ex's deposit for cleaning?

  • I always think it's interesting the odd little justifications that people will come up with when they know, deep down, that they're really in the wrong.

This kind of reminds me of that 'dilemma' a while back when the person got a parking ticket, but asked if their mum should pay for it because they happened to be running an errand for her at the time. Complete nonsense. And here's you're essentially saying 'I'm going to steal £100 from my ex but it's OK because I did all the cleaning'. It's a total non sequitur and I think you know it!
  • Ephesians 4:28

Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labour, doing honest work with his own hands............. (funny what you find when you google `should I steal.`Done the labour before the theft.)

Looks like we have someone of such low morality that they find the need to have others justify their actions.

Lets hope the lady in question reads MSE, there is sufficient information disclosed that she will be able to work out who this is on about.
  • You have got to be joking, i cannot believe your even thinking of keeping money that belongs to someone else...she earnt it and trusts you to be honest, just do the right thing!
I was in a relationship and he kept all my stuff and its the cruelest thing you can do to someone, just be honest and don't be an Thief, she paid it she is owed it.
And as for the cleaning all i can say is "diddums" grow up!
  • I wonder what the reaction would have been if he had moved out a month before her and she had done all the cleaning - I suspect some of the comments would have come from a completely different point of view! Clearly plenty of people commenting who have no idea what level of cleaning is required to get a rental deposit back - it's damn hard work and if I was her I would have beeen keen to know when the property would be empty so I could make sure I'd get my half of the deposit back.
As always with these dilemas there isn't enough detail for us to come to a definitive answer - I guess that's the point!
  • For me, I'm an honest person. I would split the cleaning bill. (Though me being me, I'd also factor in how long my ex had been at the property as to how heavy their burden should be) which means, if the cleaning bill comes to £20 and the deposit is £800 then they would get a minimum of £390.
Be Warned: Any decision made by ATOS should be treated with the contempt and suspicion in rightly deserves. If in any doubt, make sure to appeal any and all decisions by ATOS. Do not take their word for it, do not give them an inch of trust.

When judging if ATOS were fit for work, it looks like they self-assessed. //Rant-Disclaimer End.
  • Should I sneakily keep some of ex's deposit for cleaning?

The fact you said sneakily shows you are not being honest here.
Personally I would give the money back, as I would rather not feel guilt ridden over £100..even if I did give up the weekend to clean the flat up.
Thank you all for making MSE so wonderful!
