fulltimemum, have you read the parent thread? lots of mums on there have had problems with sma gold, things like colic etc, my DD didn't have a milk allergy in the end, just a phase i think, she's 13 months now and is nearly fully on cows milk.
there are lots of formulas availible from the dr for milk allergies, not just soya formulas but also milk based ones that have been treated to take out the lactose.
the most common ones are nutramagen 1 and 2, enfamil LF and AR
  • im surpised ur gp recommended soy at first- quite a few studies are showing links to it not being good longterm for infants now. what formula were you using? I personally would try a lower lactose formual first then after that a milk protein free one such as nutrimegen (sp?) Plus take into consideration the weather has got a hell of a lot colder and will be more dyring on their skin PLUS what baby skin/bath products do you use. Most children that i know who need to be on special formulas is due to far worse symptons than just dry skin. So if it was only dry skin then i would personalyl use Aptamil.

    do you mean me?
i already use aptamil as it's meant to taste like breastmilk.
i didn't use the soya milk as it has loads of oestrogen in it and isn't good for babies. oh and DD is 13 months now and on cows milk now, this thread is quite old now.

I wouldn't rely on goats milk not causing allergy problems: it certainly didn't work for DH.

The National Eczema Society are really great and have a helpline and factsheets. Sadly there is no 'one size fits all' answer if it IS eczema, because what suits one person doesn't work for another - eg I haven't used Persil for years because of the things it did to DH's skin, always use supermarket own brand non-bio which is usually OK!

Cow's milk is dreadful stuff and causes so many problems in children including eczema, asthma and ear infections, the more enlightened GPs are catching on to this. It is highly mucus forming too so if your tot gets a continuous nasal stream then milk should be the first thing to check out in the diet. Two weeks is widely regarded as the minimum time to get a food out of your system in order to check for an intollerance which is a pain if the option is breastfeeding but I would be tempted to try and take that long a break if you can.
  • When i weaned my daughter at around 4 months I began using formula to mix up with the baby rice ( she had been exclusivlely breast fed until this) immediately after eating it she came up in a rash all around her mouth and chin(like nettle rash). I tried her again the next day incase it was a coincidence and same thing happened. I spoke with the HV and Dr and they prescribed Prosobee Soya formula milk which i tried and she was fine with. Dr said no allergy, use dairy by increasing gradually into her diet. Which i did, her skin around her face was terrible. She did nothing but winge and woke all night.
One day i just said to my husband, right no dairy at all lets see what happens.

As if by magic, within 48 hrs, her skin cleared up and she actually slept all night :T
After research on the net i think she has an intollerance rather than an allergy?

Went back to Dr and HV and they weren't really much help, told me to introduce it in a couple of months. Well I haven't i have carried on with soya formula (she is 18 months old now), i use soya spread, cheese, yogurts, ice cream.
It is really hard tho to find recipies that are dairy free. But what also is amazing is the amount of foods that contain milk or milk products. I have a family of five and often have to do baby something different, which she now notices and usually throws a strop.
It is also hard when other 2 have ice cream at the park ar choc at easter. she ends up with a fruit stick and i get  from her!

After reading thru here tho i think i'll go back to docs and ask, actually insist, on being referred to a dietician.

    HTH ;)
Have you tried Swedish Glace Ice cream - soya based & delicious - sold in Asda & Sainsburys, neapolatan flavours in Tesco, other flavours in health food stores. I am intolerant to dairy, as is my daughter & mother. Was difficult at first but there are plenty of substitutes these days - eg: Pure margerine instead of butter. Look in the Freefrom section of supermarkets for other products. They may be more expensive but you have peace of mind that there are no dairy products in them. I have lived with this for 15 years so you just get into using these products and it becomes a way of life for all the family. Hope this helps
