milk allergy

i have just switched for breast to formula milk and dd has developed dry skin.
it maybe a coincidence that the two things happened at the same time but i took her to the dr thinking she has excema, but the dr thinks she may have a milk intolerence and has given me some soya milk to try.
but she has no other symptoms other than the dry skin, she keeps the milk down, doesn't have the runs and doesn't have colic.
and she is being weaned as well. can anyone offer an advice, does it sound like a milk allergy?

Sounds like intolerance rather than allergy. My DD had cow's milk allergy and any contact brought her out with urticaria (nettle rash), temperature, itching, swollen lips etc. Thankfully she had grown out of it by 4 years. She still gets eczema now she's taking milk and I do wonder if that is the cause. When she was small the Dr prescribed Nutramigen, a cow's milk formula which has been treated to be non-allergenic. My DS is 11 months and still bf. I haven't tried him on any dairy yet, waiting till 12 months. Hope he'll be ok.
Try not to worry, but if symptoms became more pronounce etc I would contact the Dr again.0 -
I've heard that Goats milk is less likely to cause this type of probs - I think Antony Worral Thompson uses for his girls for this reason - I'll see if I can confirm that & edit this post if I find any thing ok...

This is exactly how my son's ezcema started - we went onto soya formula for a little while but then had to change again as his ezcema came back. We now use nutramigen formula & his skin is loads better.
We're waiting for test results to see if DS has a milk protein allergy which can cause ezcema.
He also keeps his milk down and didn't have colic.
Did you get any emollient cream from the doc - we have oilatum bath stuff too which helps to keep his skin moisturised.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 027

Hi, You don't say how old your little one is? My DD is 16 weeks and has been on a hypo-allergenic milk for 6 weeks now as she is cow's milk intolerant and has severe reflux.
Both my dd's consultant and dietician have said that they consider Soya milk to be unsuitable for children under 2 as it doesn't contain the specific nutrients needed. I would ask for a paediatric referral to the hospital so your little one can be monitored under the care of a dietician.
Sorry if i sound a bit over the top just we have had lots of problems since she was born and the consultant and dietician are worth their weight in gold for both knowledge and support. Following a milk free food diet is NOT as easy as it sounds IMO lol
Hope you get it sorted.0 -
the dr didn't want to give any creams as he wanted to she how she does on the milk and to see if it clears. he said to try the milk for a week and if there is no inprovement then it's not the milk iyswim0

Well personally i would say its a bit of a leap to think she's has an intolerance if she is otherwise healthy and happy. Eczema is very common in babies/young children and if you were eating dairy as part of your diet whilst b/f i would doubt this is related.
All the same if the gp does want to rule out an intolerance i would go back and ask for an "elemental" formula milk not soya for the reasons in my earlier post.

thanks, i have decided to go back to fully breastfeeding her for a week and see how she goes, if the dry skin clears up i know it is the milk (aptimil) if not it's eczema.
i have just been reading up on wysoy and i don't like the sound of it tbh and would prefer not to give it to her.
the dr didn't even mention eczema and jumped to a milk problem as a diagnosis straight away. but i think it's because the dry skin started at the same time as the introduction of formula, but this also happened at the same time we started weaning her so i don't know what to think.0 -
When i weaned my daughter at around 4 months I began using formula to mix up with the baby rice ( she had been exclusivlely breast fed until this) immediately after eating it she came up in a rash all around her mouth and chin(like nettle rash). I tried her again the next day incase it was a coincidence and same thing happened. I spoke with the HV and Dr and they prescribed Prosobee Soya formula milk which i tried and she was fine with. Dr said no allergy, use dairy by increasing gradually into her diet. Which i did, her skin around her face was terrible. She did nothing but winge and woke all night.
One day i just said to my husband, right no dairy at all lets see what happens.
As if by magic, within 48 hrs, her skin cleared up and she actually slept all night :T
After research on the net i think she has an intollerance rather than an allergy?
Went back to Dr and HV and they weren't really much help, told me to introduce it in a couple of months. Well I haven't i have carried on with soya formula (she is 18 months old now), i use soya spread, cheese, yogurts, ice cream.
It is really hard tho to find recipies that are dairy free. But what also is amazing is the amount of foods that contain milk or milk products. I have a family of five and often have to do baby something different, which she now notices and usually throws a strop.
It is also hard when other 2 have ice cream at the park ar choc at easter. she ends up with a fruit stick and i get  from her!
After reading thru here tho i think i'll go back to docs and ask, actually insist, on being referred to a dietician.
