Castelan Furniture Warranties

I have been in dispute with this company for almost a year regarding faults with my furniture, the main problem was that they would send an inspector to check the reported faults then I heard nothing. I would have to contact them to find out what was happening. They would then say they had been trying to contact me ! And as it wasn't a manufacturers fault they were not liable. After 3 different inspections and a failed repair which the inspector did as a gesture of goodwill,(some goodwill gesture ! ) they closed my case.
I then asked for copies of the inspectors report and was charged £10 by Castellan for copies of the reports which came on Castellan headed paper even though the inspectors were supposed to be independent.
:(
Anyway having wasted £300 on a 5 year "Platinum warranty" and now a further £10 on a biased report I have contacted the finance company. As I took the furniture on interest free credit over 4 years and the furniture is only just 3 years old, I have discovered that I can claim under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.
:T
RESULT - All my money back and the suite being uplifted. The down side is I cant claim the cost of the worthless warranty but one in the eye to Castellan. DO NOT buy extended warranties from Harveys, Reids, DFS or SCS they all are covered by this company and I have since heard of other people in the same boat as me.
Dont let them get away with this. They drag it out so you will get fed up and forget your claim.

Perhaps better advice would be to check what the warranty covers before the cooling off period ends. Make sure it's suitable for you.
  • Warranty covered accidental damage, manufacturing faults & cosmetic damage. Warranty was bought with Suite from Reids furnishing. When Reids went into administration warrantys were changed from Home Serve to Castelan. No information until I needed to make a claim then told to re-direct my claim to Castelan. Platinum warranty was recommended due to extent of cover. But Castelan wont honour it.
  • My 'take' on this is that if there is a so-called 'wear and tear' clause anywhere in the insurance, all the more reason for not touching it with a barge-pole. I think 'wear and tear' can be entirely in the eye of the beholder

Had a problem myself once with my late mother's furniture after only 2 months - my enquiries suggested it was basically a manufacturing fault - the insurance inspector from 'Guardsman' just said 'not covered - wear and tear'.

Sometimes, sales personnel get paid more for selling the 'add-ons' than the actual product, and of course they catch you in a 'buying mood'. But yes, I agree, no point in buying any insurance product which isn't likely to pay out when the 'crunch' comes.
