Sorry to hear that you needed surgery and hope that things are much better now. Life can be very hard sometimes and if you can't afford the things you need it really doesn't help does it?

certainly isnt nice but tbh iam an ex bankrupt totally my fault after hubby of 15yrs left,so its fear of getting into debt again. people say you cant be cold and i think if you cant afford it what choice is there. i learnt some tough lessons in 2011 but it was def the best thing i ever did and value things more. im lucky in some respects i have a roof even if its damp and draughty i was always cold but loosing 9stone in 2009 def didnt help lol

Thats exactly why the planet is doomed with that sort of attitude of yours, David Attenbrough got it right in a quote yesterday about the worlds population calling it a "plague " of humans. this is people like you taking more than the enviroment can sustain by their huge carbon footprints paying no attention to anything except "what they like ". Despite all the efforts by governments for us to cut right back, all what seems to be happening now is for the developed world to be taking more and more out of the earths resources, cars are getting heavier and bigger every year, people more obese, their homes are overheated to the extent that 21 degrees all winter is seen as normal. The ones I go into especially the middle classes, I am gasping for air and happy to get out of their hothouses. Good on David Attenbrough at least for getting it right

well i for one def have i used to have it boiling indoors and still say i was cold to my ex husband. i also used to waste every penny. now its very different. but lets not have an argument on the rights and wrongs

Any respect I may have had for David Attenborough went right out the window at these comments. :eek::eek::mad::mad: Humans are not a plague in any way, shape or form. If we would only share resources fairly this world would be a far better place.

Yes some people seem to have very warm homes but that's a long way away from what DA seems to be saying.

So people turn off their heating and suddenly pollution goes down? I expect not. They're still going to have the money they would have spent on heating, only now it will be spent on consumer goods and services that consume resources and fuel, or saved in a bank who invest it in buying and building things which require resources and fuel.

I think personal environmental impact is largely about how much income you make, not what specific stuff you spend it on.

Trying to bring the topic back on course.

If you have expensive energy or a modest income it is best not to have the heating on overnight when you are in bed. The house doesn't need heating then and the heating loss to the outside is greatest at night when the temperature is lowest.

Similarly the bedroom should be left unheated or else the heating to very low. Bedrooms should be kept cool for comfort and energy efficiency.

What you do need is a really good duvet and a couple of hot water bottles. Not two duvets and three blankets or whatever. Blankets on top of duvets will compress them and then they are less effective

I personally prefer down (not feathers and down). Yes they are more expensive than synthetic, but they last for several decades and keep you toasty warm. It is like sleeping under a hot cloud:)

Fair enough. Anyway, have you got sufficient insulation in the loft and walls (assuming they're cavity walls)? Now seems about the best time to be doing things like this as there many generous subsidies around, making it very cheap or even free.

There are far more places that energy can be saved before people have to be cold in their homes.

For a start lets look at shops who leave their window displays on all night, let's look a shopping centres that are heated, lets look at streets that are illuminated all night, let's look at private heated outdoor swimming pools, lets look at car manufacturers being allowed to make huge cars with huge engines, lets look at illuminated buildings etc, etc, etc.

There's a very long list where unnecessary energy waste can be saved before people need to live in the cold.

You think the government want us to cut back to save the environment? of course they don't, they want us to cut back to reduce their fuel poverty stats. If the government really gave a damn they would start by taking more control of all of those things mentioned above and many more where big business are wasting far more energy than people being comfortable in their homes could use in a lifetime.

You are very naive of you believe everyone being could would solve the planets problems.
