new netbook?

Options
Dad's just asked me to search for a netbook for him, problem is I've no idea what to look for. It would just be for web surfing, checking emails, facebook etc but he wants something that runs quickly. He initially wanted a laptop but thinks it's too big so I suggested a netbook - anyone any idea what to look for or know any reasonable deals at the minute? Thanks in advance!

    Recently bought one of these

    http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/series/Toshiba-NB510-Series/1119453/

I went for the Toshiba NB510-11U as it has Windows Home Premium and 2GB Ram, most appear to have Windows Starter and only 1GB Ram.

Have had a Toshiba 17" Laptop for several years and never had any problems which is why I went for another Toshiba.
  • If its purely web based stuff have you looked at Chromebooks? Pretty much everything runs in the browser so unless he wants to do gaming, MS Office etc, that may be a suggestion.

Thanks for the replies, I think he'd prefer a netbook and if he did need to wordprocess something that option would be there. I like the look of the toshiba but there are so many options!?!
  • You can still word process on a Chromebook but it would be via Google Docs (don't know if third party options exist??).

If that's def out, do you know of a preferred screen size? Budget?

You state he wants something that runs quickly, the more Ram the quicker it will run which is another reason why I went for the one with 2GB Ram.

He'd be happy with 10" or 11" screen but if he got a good deal would consider a notebk 15", budget is £200-300. Thanks!
  • You can get 15 inch laptops on Win 8, 4GB RAM, and reasonable sized hard drive for £300, but they'll skimp on the processor and you'll be looking at Celerons most prob. You may find a Pentium dual core but will struggle to find an i3 most probably.

Ok, I've had a look on PCWorld and Currys website as he wants to buy it somewhere local and has decided the netbook is too small so will go for the 15" screen. Price bracket up to £350 would someone mind taking a quick look and see it they think any of those listed are good - they all have different processors and I'm confused as to the difference!

    Opinion only.........!!

gives you an i3, 6GB RAM, and a 750GB HDD. The i3 is a lot better than the other processors in that price range. Looks like the PC worldsite has the graphics spec wrong though as the i3-2310M has HD3000 graphics according to Intel's site which is better than the X4500M PC World say.

Don't worry about it too much - they don't make 'em anymore. ;)
