Newborn sleepwear in winter?

Congratulations on your baby boy.
When my kids were babies i would check to see they were warm enough by gently putting my fingers down the back of their neck in between their skin and their clothes. If they were nice and warm then that was good enough for me. If they were a bit too hot then take one blanket off. Not warm enough, put an extra blanket on. None of mine had much hair so if they were a bit cool i'd put a hat on them.
Didnt have central heating so i hadnt got a clue as to the temperature of the room. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I used to put mine to bed in a vest, baby grow and knitted jumper when they were babies in the winter. A couple of blankets too. He is still very new though, so I suspect he is still going to wake loads in the night.0

Your baby is probably too cold. I think there has been a backlash as years ago you woul see a baby in a snowsuit in june! Basically as has been said base the coverings on the approx. layers that you are comfortable in .0

Forgot to add that in, excellent advice.
I wouldn't bother with room thermometers either, it takes away your instinct, you can learn your own baby and gauge from there. As another poster said, some babies like to be warm some cooler.

Thanks all. He shivers whenever I take the jumper off in the day so I think he must take after me and really feel the cold. He came out at 2.89kg so probably has a bit less fat than average. I will try him in a jumper tonight and see how that goes.
Thanks all!0 -
I found 18 degrees to be too cool for my lo, she prefers to be warm like me. Her room is usually between 20-21 degrees and she wears a long sleeved bodysuit, sleep suit and 2.5 tog grobag.
Definitely go with instinct re temp and your babies comfort but it's also possible that as someone said the baby hasn't got day and night sorted yet so is waking for milk.
I think baby has to be about 8lb before they can go in the sleeping bags.
Congrats x0 -

My son had a sleeping bag (you can get them for very young babies) He wasnt a good sleeper, until I got one. Two years later, he still has one :-)0

Hi, have a look here for room temperature and bedding guides (you will need to scroll down). Basically it tells you how many blankets a baby should have at how many degrees.
My LO is quite happy at 18-19 degrees in a short sleeved vest, baby grow and a 2.5 tog sleeping bag. If it's colder than 18 degrees then we put a long sleeved vest on him. Sometimes at night his hands get cold so we pop socks on them (they stay on better than scratch mitts!).
Obviously, each baby is different so you'll need to keep checking your baby's tummy to make sure it's not too hot/cold.0 -
We were advised not to use the grobags or sleeping bags straight away, just as they can slip down under the neck fastenings more easily at that age. That was 5 yrs ago though so the design may have changed since then.
For first approx 6 weeks DS was in a popper vest, sleepsuit, and then under a cotton sheet and a blanket (the airhole type old-fashioned ones). He was born in June so it was warmer then.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.
Encouragement always works better than judgement.0
